Former Redskins quarterback Doug Williams, the MVP of Super Bowl XXII, was in Phoenix to hand out the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday. But not everything went so well while he was there.
Details are sketchy, but this video appears to show him getting into a profane shouting match with a fan after he declined the fan's request for an autograph:
So what happened? The guy who posted the video to YouTube also posted a description of the incident that makes Williams sound like a jerk, but from everything I know about Williams, I'm inclined to think he wouldn't be rude to a fan if the fan weren't rude to him first. I saw a lot of rude fans hounding a lot of former players for autographs when I was in Phoenix, and if the athletes occasionally respond to rude autograph requests with a bit of rudeness themselves, I don't blame them.

I'm with you. I have never heard anything derogatory about Doug. This smells like a setup.

Everyone has their limits as to how far they will be pushed (verbally abused, insulted, etc.) To refer to the jackass who caused this as "a fan" is an insult to all of us who are true fans.

Doug Williams is one of the classiest guys you'll ever meet. Sometimes, fans can be so obnoxious it's ridiculous. Doug Williams is a Super Bowl hero, and he should be treated as such. Please write more stories about Britney Spears, and leave Mr. Williams alone.

Doug Williams always was, is and always will be one of the true class guys in professional sports. No way I can't believe this dork provoked the hell out of him to get any kind of negative reaction from Doug. Even the late great J.C. got riled on occasion

You can tell by this ass clown's tone of voice that he was pushing for a negative reaction. Doug's reputation and history are right up there with Tony Gwynn, Warren Dunn, and a host of other quality atheletes who consistently remember their fans and the cities they represent. He has helped out numerous charities and public events gratis. This jerk needs to take a long walk off a short pier. Doug's one of the best.

Yep, I agree that this is not Doug's typical behaviour, I have known Doug for many years,( not close as a friend but more on a professional side and never seen him to react that way to any fans over the years, he was a guy that would come out of the lockeroom after the game and just walk up to a speak to strangers. I watched him holding fans kids as he talked to them about the game. I am willing to bet that the disrespectful idiot that filmed and posted this had a bunch of photgraphs to have him sign as is often the case of not necessarily true fans but rather people out to take these autographs and sell them to sports memorabilla stores. I have seen some fans with 20-30 pictures that they have asked player's to sign. The fan is lucky as many player's that I know may not have walked away from a confrontation like this. Whoever you are that posted it you are an idiot, are like summer school aka "no class". Only your mama would support you on this.

I played football with Doug in the USFL (Oklahona Outlaws, Tulsa, Oklahoma) back in the mid 80's and he was very polite to everyone, even the drunk redneck fans at Skelly Stadium. When the offense came off of the field, Coach Woody put us on Doug Duty, which meant we stood next to him and draped him with a rain poncho to avoid the incoming beer bombs that he was often hit with. I never once saw him act out of line, even when the frequent "N" word was shouted. Doug must have been really needled in order for him to cut lose on an autograph hound, this jerk was no true fan. Bravo Dougie!

these kids need constant reminders that the people are watching at all times (and listening!) We all have bad days but they aren't photgraphed , video-taped and critiqued on a daily or minute to minute basis.
Perhaps the Giants need a review for all players:
"what not to say/do if the media is present..."

That "fan" is an embarassment to true fans. This is what's become of the age of video and You Tube. Relax people youy dont have to try to get famous at someone else's expense. Doug Williams was very clearly pushed to that reaction. I hold nothing against him..would've done the same thing myself

Well, what bothers me is the headline Michael David Smith... you write "I'm inclined to think he wouldn't be rude to a fan if the fan weren't rude to him first", yet the headline screams "Superbowl MVP swears at fan". You people (the media) try to create the frenzy, you tend to overblow it. It saddens me....

What a scam. You can tell by the tone of voice by the so called "fan", that this was his intended purpose. "we got it on film" - you know where you can stick that film. You are a disgrace to the human race. Someone needs to kick your "a.." buddy. Go crawl in a hole where you belong. Good for you Doug!!! This jerk needed to have his lights punched out. Too bad you are such a gentleman or he would have got what he really deserved. We love you Doug!!!

Doug Williams has been a good guy forever. Since the guy was able to record the exchange, obviously, it was a setup by the provocateur.

Doug didn't get the best treatment from the Redskins or the NFL - and shame on them. He will always be remembered for "the Quarter" against Denver when he turned the classical boring Superbowl into an electrifying experience for all football fans. He has always been a class person, a great teacher of kids, and a leader in his community.
