Notes on a trip to the Super Bowl.
On Friday I met some members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated, untied champions in NFL history. There's a part of me that finds it unseemly that the '72 Dolphins constantly seek attention, but there's also a part of me that thinks this Reebok "Perfectville" commercial is pretty funny:
The Perfectville campaign had two commercials ready, one in case the Giants won the Super Bowl and one in case the Patriots won. No word on what the commercial in which Mercury Morris welcomes the Patriots to the neighborhood looks like.

The '72 Dolphins greatest feat wasn't the perfect season, it was being such dicks about it that everyone except themselves want to see it matched.

Apparently if the Pats won, the Dolphins would have sent a pie over to the "Patriots house" as a welcoming gift

I am a huge Giants fan but this game really showed how great the Dolphins' accomplishment is. To go undefeated is the toughest accomplishment in team sports.

In my opinion this was the best way for the football season to end.The Patriots and there arrogant fans and coach got what they deserve.Sure spygate was at the start of the season, but my question is,if the Pats are such a great team, why do you need to cheat and what other games have they cheated in.To celebrate and praise such a team is a disgrace and what kind of message do we send to our young people oh its ok to cheat, just pay a fine and go ahead and win a championship, well guess what... you lost.

Mr Smith's comments on how "unseemly" the 72 fins are just represent how the majority of the sports media feels about them. They seem them as old has beens and not the "new hotness" like the Pats.
The majority of the sports media had crowned the Pats halfway through the season, predicting them going undefeated months ago.
The majority of the media has been making excuses for the Pats running up the score on everyone, and downplaying Spygate.
Yet everyone likes to bash the old 72 Dolphins when they go around promoting their accomplishment. Well, they get no respect form anyone outside of Florida, so why not give it to themselves? Give these old guys a break. I've heard them say nothing but nice things about the Pats, a team that deserves criticism if there ever was one.
Mr Smith, we get it already.
You even complain that the Dolphins not being favored in the Super Bowl taints their greatness. Oh boy. So again, the opinions of the odds makers and the media, and public perception trumps history?
Well the Pats were huge favorites to win Super Bowl XLII and they blew it. Now *that's* the kind of thing that taints a record. But I guess we should criticize the Giants, because they weren't favored, even though they beat the "greatest" team ever.
You know, I don't like to argue about whom is the greatest team ever. 1972 was a long time ago. But the accomplishment the boys of 72 made as a *team* will stand forever.
The Patriots did a great job throwing the ball all year long. They had an amazing offensive line. But as a *team* they wound up short of the 72 Dolphins.
But sure, the Pats were favored in the Super Bowl and drooled over by the sports media more than the 72 Fins. So, in their own little world, the 2007 Patriots will always be the greatest to many.

I remember watching the Dolphins play since 1970..It was great...the rivalries etc...I remember the Chiefs/Dolphins playoff on Christmas think in 1970 or 71...great game longest at the time (Fin-Chargers Longest game ever). Miami also went 32-2 through the 72-74 season No ther pro sports team can match the win/loss % not evn the Bulls 72-10 one year.
The game was different back in the 70's running was the way to win remember Csonka/Morris=1000+ rushing with Kiick right behind them. Passing wasn't the big thing...as it is today. DEFENSE is what won games and let face it the best defence's of recent memory are of the teams of the 70's except for the Bears in 85. There are some thing I saw in the Pat's that reminded me of the Dolphins and that was execution. Yes the Dolphins of 72 should be proud for they did what no other team did...I will alway remember and respect the 72 Dolphins....and remember this they weren't getting paid MILLIONS like today....When the World Football Leauge offered all that money to Csonka and Warfield etc I couldn't blame them....
Well lets have a toast for another year.

"There's a part of me that finds it unseemly that the '72 Dolphins constantly seek attention,"
Hey MDS... WTF during what time of the year exactly do these Dolphin Vets 'seek' attention...
unh....w-e-ll... OK ! It's when your FU'd media brethren make it an issue and there's usually one team left 'undefeated' for maybe one more game. Then it's the 'unseemly' 72 Dolphins looking for attention NOT the UN seemly dog-shite media looking for a little 'blood in the water'
I'm a DolFan Native Miamian and I saw the Fin's in 72 and thru out the entire year Shula wouldn't even hear or let any of his players speak about UNDEFEATED all he ever talked about was getting back to the Super Bowl and avenging the previous years loss to Dallas ...
BTW for the record the Miami Dolphins even with it's abysmal in recent years is STIL the WINNINGEST (percentage) NFL Team in the history of the NFL
AND during the 70's which so many people have anointed as the Steelers era the Dolphins won the first half of the 70's with 2 Super Bowls and went to 3 while the Steelers won the 2nd half of the 70's with 3 for 3 .... The only reason the Dolphins are not talked about as a Dynasty in the 70's is because of the WFL that took the guts out of the Fins in 75 by taking Zonk Kiick and Warfield
Anyway it's still great to be a Dolfan and part of the best UNDEFEATED Team ever. 17-0 `72
