ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has asked coach Lane Kiffin to resign.According to Mortensen, Davis sent Kiffin a letter in which he asked Kiffin to step down. In fact, Davis actually provided Kiffin with a resignation letter that he wanted Kiffin to sign and return to the team.
Davis and Kiffin have butted heads almost from the beginning of Kiffin's tenure as head coach, particularly over Kiffin's staff of assistants. Most notably, Kiffin wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan after this season and Davis refused.
Kiffin would rather get fired than resign because a firing allows him to guarantee his salary for the remaining two seasons on his contract. Kiffin is currently in Mobile, Alabama with the rest of the Raiders' coaching staff. He is scheduled to coach in the Senior Bowl tomorrow.
According to Mortensen, if Kiffin does leave, Davis would like to replace him with former Vikings and Cardinals head coach Dennis Green.

Just ask John Shanahan how easy it is to collect money from Al Davis after he fires you. He could fire Kiffin and then refuse to pay him, contract law notwithstanding, just to make a point. Done it before.

this just proves that Al Davis is out of touch with his team, and the NFL.Let the kid finish his contract, and by then, there will be a number of candidates to replace kiffin when his contract is up,or give this guy the benefit of the doubt, and allow him at least one more year to turn things around.Al Davis needs to turn the team over to somebody else to run,and by doing so,this may be the only way the Raiders may have a chance to build a quality team, and have a winning season.

Al Davis give me a break. Maybe you should let the coach run the team instead of you running the team in to the ground. I am a die hard RAIDER fan!! But damn I am tired of losing. Kiffin did a good job this year and the team respects him. Give him a chance. Another words Al.... SHUT THE HELL UP!!

"Commitment to excellence" and "Just win baby" have become "let's get Al committed" and "just loose baby". You obnoxious Raider fans need to get Al in a rest home and take charge of your team so we can renew this Bronco-Raider rivalry where it means something. Both teams sucked this past season and it's not good for either of us. I think Kiffin is good and for the life of me, I will never understand why Al got rid of Jon Gruden.......

Its Pathetic, standard Al Davis move though...lets see I really want to FIRE you but I dont want to pay the rest of your two years salary so just as a favor to me for hiring you..resign. Yea...right! The man needs to simply either give control to the GM and sit back or sell the team so it can improve..

go big al - hire dennis green. a proven loser that
can continue the raider tradition. i need more teams like the raiders and 49ers when i go to the sports book at my local casino. a couple of sure losers make picks on the parlay cards a little easier. i am with you, al. go for it.

As a die hard Raider fan myself, this doesn't make any sense, even for Al Davis. If you don't want Kiffin, then fire him. This asking him to resign and then writing up the resignation letter definitely does not sound like "Committment to Excellence", its sounds like "Committment to Committed". Al, what are you thinking?
Kiffin has done a very good job, considering he had no NFL coaching experience prior to being named Raiders coach . The Raiders, finally, seem to be in the right direction. Let Kiffin grow along with the core of young talent. Trust me, Raider Nation will not be dissapointed. The Chargers are fading fast, as well as the Chiefs and Broncos as well. Look how quick the Packers went from 4-12 in 2005 to hosting the NFC Championship Game in 2007. It definitely will happen as long as Al Davis butts out!

Davis has to take a step back and give the situation an objective look see; I think he is capable of that.
Gotta remember Davis has overall a helluva track record. How on top of things he is now is questionable tho.
With some coaching stability I think Oakland has the makings of a good team.
While I think Ryan is a good coach the Head Coach should be able to pick his assistants without interference from the front office.
Get the emotions out of the situation and some reason in place.

It is stupid to replace a new, young, coach after only 1 year when you handed him a disaster of a 2-14 team to begin with. Add to that giving away Randy Moss for nothing and choosing with your #1 pick a quarterback who holds out until half the season is gone and losing your starting RB to injury, I would say Kiffin was lucky to win 4 games.
Dennis Green is at best, a below average coach with a big problem controlling his emotional outbursts. His last team, Arizona, was a catastrophe. Why would anyone want him after that trainwreck?
