"How the Giants (Almost) Did It" is a series that will detail the Giants near defeat of the New England Patriots in week 17 of the regular season. Its purpose is to prove that the outcome of Super Bowl XLII is not a foregone conclusion and that the New York Giants have a legitimate chance at the biggest upset in NFL history.
It seems almost fitting that the New York Giants and New England Patriots will meet in Super Bowl XLII. After all, these are the same two teams that met in the final week of the preseason and ended the regular season with a battle for the ages. And while the Patriots got the better of the Giants each time, New York certainly gave them a run for their money.
But how did the Giants, a team that was struggling prior to that game, push the Patriots to the brink of defeat?
It began with the one and only thing that had the Patriots concerned before the game: the offensive line.
"I think collectively this may be the best offensive line we have gone up against. They work well as a unit, and especially when they lock on to guys. I don't see a lot of guys shedding them and making tackles. They are great one-on-one blockers," Teddy Bruschi said a day before the game.
Despite losing center Shaun O'Hara to injury fairly early in the game, the Giants offensive line held tough and lived up to Bruschi's concern. And while New York did get away from the run a bit, the unit showed a great ability to open holes for Brandon Jacobs and company-- something that will be a necessity on Super Bowl Sunday.
In addition, the offensive line did an excellent job keeping a very aggressive front seven off of Eli Manning. And although they did eventually register a sack, Manning generally had all day in the pocket. He was able to step up rather than throw off his back foot, and frequently had time to check all of his receivers before making a decision. Even when the Pats were sending different blitzers, the Giants were able to pick it up and keep Eli on his feet.
On paper the matchups didn't seem to favor the Giants, but when all was said and done, the offensive line was one of the reasons the Giants "almost did it."

Not a yahoo, not a hater. These are ten legitimate and rational reasons why the Pats will win:
1. Even Giants fans know that Pats are better. The better team has won nearly every Super Bowl, with only a couple of notable exceptions, including 2001, when the pats beat the Rams.
2. The giants are "hot," but still ended the season with how many more losses than the Pats? A LOT, huh? In a weaker conference. Yes, they are hot, but they wouldn't have even made it to the playoffs in the AFC.
3. A HOT Eli Manning is still not TOM BRADY. Most people that want the Giants to win are hoping that Eli Manning will continue to play out of his skull, and Brady will lay a complete egg in, arguably, the biggest game of his life, on a stage in which he has won two MVP's. Okay, it can happen. But not likely.
4. 18 wins. No losses. NO LOSSES. IN a tougher conference.
5. Oh, yeah, the Giants played the pats tough in that last game. They surely did. They were 12 points ahead, halfway through the 3rd quarter, and lost by 3. Contrary to popular belief, giving up a 12 point lead in a quarter and a half means you are really not as good as that team. Not nearly as good.
6. In that game, Brady was forcing passes to Moss all day long to break a record. And, even though everyone in the world knew that Brady would do this, he still broke the record. On the pass play that broke the record, Moss was wide open, but, hey, people make mistakes, right? Except for the fact that Moss was wide open on the play before! OOOOOPS.
7. Not to downplay a remarkable achievement, here. Winning ten games in a row on the road is remarkable. But, ahem. The Pats didn't lose any games on the road, either. OR AT HOME.
8. In that close game the two played, the Pats were missing the entire right side of their offensive line, and both their tight ends. And, oh, did I mention this? THEY STILL WON. This is not an excuse, because excuses are for losers. It's a fact, and oh, yeah, once again, THEY WON.
9. Bill Belichick has NEVER lost a game in the postseason in which he has had two weeks to prepare. Tom Coughlin hasn't lost any of those games, either, though. Oh, wait, that's because he has never been in that situation before. So, as good as Coughlin is, if you weren't a Pats hater or a Giants fan, who would YOU bet the house on?
10. Experience counts, doesn't it? The Pats have 20 players who have played in a Super Bowl. The Giants have 3. Now, if the Giants were a better team, with a better overall record, and a better big game QB, and a better coach, and they were healthier, none of this would really matter. But, please, folks, if you are going to analylze this, use facts. These facts are not in dispute. If you think the Giants will win, you are doing so out of your heart, not your head. Which is fine. But don't claim the Giants will win this because they are somehow better.

The Pats did win 6 more games than the Giants, but they won it in a WEAKER conference than the Giants. This is not to say the Pats aren't better (they are) but you did say the Giants were in a tougher conference.

Joe true the Pat's have a Great team and are 18-0 but there toughest games came against the NFC East.
And Brady does look tired so does the Denfenceive line. And 1 more thing you forgot as a 13 1/2 point underdog i'll take the Giants anyday. So in ten days will see who wins , Maybe it's time for a new poster boy Eli.

"chance at the biggest upset in NFL history." What is the spread? 12? 13? Not really the biggest upset in football history.

"Almost"???? The Giant's didn't WIN, it's either win or lose, not "almost won" or "almost lost", that's kind of like saying I was "almost pregnant". 18 wins; 0 losses.... The Patriots record speaks for itself.... LIFE IS GOOD... now what will I wear to the parade????

We can all say what we think and feel, but when push comes to shove any one thing or any one play i.e. fumble, dropped pass, interception etc. can win or lose a game, any game. I doubt anyone who was going to bet his house on thas game would pick the Giants. They are a good solid team and certainly with their achievments are a valid opponent. But one has to admit that the Patriots do "APPEAR" unbeatable considering their record and accomplishments such as points scored in a season. And consider this they Beat Indianopolis, Dallas, Jacksonville, Pittsburg, Giants etc. two of those teams were undefeated [Indy-Dallas] when they beat them. Hardly soft touches would you say? Yes they squeaked by some of their games, but they won them and you have to admit that is the mark of a champion to win the close ones. The Giants will come to play and no one knows that better than the Patriots and their fans. So lets hope for a good game, and if the Patriots do win, there was no easy road to achieving their ultimate goal 19-0 and anyone who says that they had an easy schedule
"TAKE YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND".
Now for all of you IDIOTS who will scream cheats
"EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT"

This is a logical response to Joe Wallace from a Giant fan.
#1 By better I guess you mean by record. Yes the Patriots have had a great season and deserve the respect they get. The G-men are also in the SB and only the game will say who is better on the 3rd of Feb.
#2 WTF? Yes the Giants are hot but why would they not make the playoffs in the AFC like the 10-6 Steelers or the 10-6 Titans?
#3 True, a hot Eli has 0 turnovers in the playoffs. How many does Brady have?
#4 How many times will we hear 18-0? If it is more than 1 of your points give it up. I would say 10-0 on the road back at ya! BTW The Ravens Beat you guys cause Welker did not have possession on the catch at the end. Replay that!
#5 Having to play catch up says what? Your team was lucky once again that they won. No disrespect, but if the Giants are as bad as you say. How did you win by 3?
#6 Brady and Moss had a decent game. Moss has been absent so far in the play-offs and Brady throws more Picks than anybody now. They better hope Maroney can somehow save them.
#7 See #4
#8 For once I agree. Both teams had injuries and that sucks but there are NO EXCUSES! Both teams will be healthy this time and it should be fun to watch.
#9 They both come from Parcell's Giant teams. I really do not believe the head coach will decide this game. I actually respect Bellichek although I do not like him. Coughlin has learned a new way this year and the DC SPAG is the real deal!
#10 I do respect what the Pats have done, but I did the same to all the playoff teams the Giants played. The G-MEN will WIN AND BE THE NEW CHAMPS!
Patriots are tired and old! Go G-MEN

It doesn't matter what any of you couch potatoes say (myself included). I only hope the game is as good as the last one they played. It should be noted that unlike Dallas, Indie (can't spell Indiananoplous), and Tampa Bay these two teams did not rest its players and really went at it. If anyone did not notice those aforementioned teams all lost their first game in the playoffs. Personally, I'm hoping the Giants win.

just for the record...can every team searching for immortality play the Dolphins, Jets, and Bills twice each?...I think that 6 of those 18 wins were against JV squads with a combinded 12 wins...7 from an over achieving bills team....if someone told me I could play in a division with 2 of the three worst teams in the league and on that on paper should have been except for special teams...I'd eat it up too

All I can say is that if the weather is good(70's no wind) the Pats will kill the Giants. It'll be one of those win by 3 touchdowns. The Patriots offense played extremely well during the first half of the season and weather had to do a big part of it. Add this fact to the Patriots having 2 weeks to rest and this will be a mismatch on paper and in the superbowl.

Almost every man thinks women have no knowledge of football and I think it is unfair that it has been said on these blogs.I know as much about fb as most men. Not just trying to give NE men a hard time but most of the comments have been made by NE Fans whom are men. I don't care about records, who is unbeaten, or all these other things. You can analyze all you want but that can all go down the drain on SB Sunday. NE need not count the Giants out.I have seen a new team emerge out of the Giants the last half of the season. I am not from NY, I am not a hater because the team I pull for in my area wasn't in the playoffs this year so.. no one needs to tell me that is why I feel like I do. 75% of the country will be pulling for the Giants in the SB for many reasons that have already been discussed on these blogs.Need not go into the all the reasons ppl. don't like the Pats. Giants may just be the team that have the Pats number. Go Giants!
