When Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants refused to lie down for the undefeated New England Patriots, they knew and understood the potential consequences. Unfortunately, those consequences landed three key starters on the sidelines.Although the news on center Shaun O'Hara and linebacker Kawika Mitchell seems positive, it's the news regarding starting cornerback Sam Madison that has everyone worried.
According to Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger, Madison didn't suffer an abdominal strain as previously reported; he actually suffered a pulled muscle in his rib cage. It's an injury that supposedly causes tremendous pain and has kept the veteran out of practice all week.
In addition to Madison, cornerback Kevin Dockery (hip) missed practice again yesterday, leaving Aaron Ross and Corey Webster as the primary starters and R.W. McQuarters as the backup.
Should Madison and Dockery both find themselves on the sideline this weekend in Tampa Bay, the Giants will be forced to start Webster as they did in practice. And unfortunately, that's exactly what Buccaneers quarterback Jeff Garcia wants to hear.

Yeah... I guess some first day draft pics just don't end up being what everyone thought they'd be, for whatever reason. Why is that? How can a CB from LSU, not exactly some football backwater lower division program that doesn't get the exposure or competition to adequately evaluate talent, be a round 2 pick and after three years at the pro level, just when he'd be expected to attain that peak balance between youthful athleticism and pro knowledge and experience... bust. Bench. The GM, VP for player personnel, coaches, scouts, all wrong. It happens. Heck, out here in San Diego, that's a well known story at a much worse level than Corey. 10 years ago the Chargers traded two firsts, a second, a LB and a pro bowler to move up one spot and get one of two QBs... and the one they got is today the QB Coach at West Texas A&M University. The one they missed... ugh... can you imagine?

I'm not ready to write Webster off just yet. I think he still has what it takes to make it in the NFL as a good press corner. Tim Lewis didn't use him that way in his three years here and it took a toll on Webster and his psyche. He started even doubting himself and playing himself out of a job. He's also had some injuries to heal from.
Spags' aggressive defense and in-your-face CB play is better suited for CWeb. Madison had a much better year under Spags than he did with Lewis last year. Madison and CWeb are both physical pressure corners. Hopefully he has learned from Madison over the past couple of years. He definitely showed his skills and instincts on that pick 6 against Buffalo. Yeah, that was only one play, but sometimes that's all we need to either win or seal a win.

Looks like Webster has some life in him. Excellent all-around game for the CB most thought was done.
