The Bull Pen is the lower level endzone seats in Reliant Stadium that is the Houston Texans' version of the Dawg Pound, only less canine and battery chucking.Yesterday, a diehard season ticket holder, (and also a nice guy known in the Texans fanbase as "Overalls" as that's what he wears), was told to leave the Bull Pen because he was uh .... standing up cheering his team. Apparently, the people behind him objected to him standing up and told ushers.
This, of course, is crazy, because most people in the Bull Pen stand up. Corporate and ticket broker seats have infiltrated the Bull Pen, so there are some folks watching the game there who prefer a more sedate atmosphere.
Even so, standing up in the Bull Pen is one of the few traditions that the young Texans team has, and it is even written about on their website:
[F]ans within the Bull Pen are encouraged to stand throughout the game, sing, cheer and otherwise support the team in an enthusiastic manner and therefore this section may not be a good fit for children or families.I emailed the Texans to find out more information about why their ushers would boot out a season ticket holder for standing up, but haven't heard back from them yet. (I don't blame them because I am guessing most are in their post-season vacations already). So much for the Texans 2007 marketing slogan about how the fans are "The Homefield Advantage."
Personally, I think if you want to sit down an entire game to eat your nachos, you should stay home on your couch. I've been asked to sit down before at a game, but unless the people behind me have some serious physical disability that I can see or am told about, I'm not about sit down and golf clap my way through a freaking football game. I think fans should be booted out of the Bull Pen for not standing up. What say you?

I wonder if any Dawg pound members have been removed for standing. As an Aggie, I stood thru all games as a student, even though I was in a leg brace/on crutches thru my college years. The Texans need to train their ushers better.

If the Texans front office is serious about the "homefield advantage" they profess the stadium to offer the team, then there should be an area that is looked at by the players to be the hardest of the hardcore fans in Reliant.
It already bothers me that brokers who own some of those seats in the Bull Pen, sell them to other teams fans. Perhaps a way to ensure that one section remains solidly Texans fans is to notify all PSL owners and individual ticket buyers that standing throughout the game is to be expected.

In the Texans organizations own words, "fans within the Bull Pen are encouraged to stand throughout the game." In all fairness to all Texan fans, I don't think it should be mandatory for all fans to stand throughout the game for various reasons, one being there are still 70K seats to sell each game, some fans simply don't have stand as part of enjoying the game, and we certainly don't want to be inconsiderate of fans with physical handicaps that make standing impossible or seeing over those standing. I for one prefer not to stand the entire game, but still enjoy the game and cheer loudly for the team even in my moments in the seated position. However, that would also be a consideration for me in not choosing to purchase tickets in the Bull Pen.
Hopefully the Texan organization will rethink their position and go back to the spirit in which the BP was intended. I would be happy if that would include returning the Pep Band to the BP as well.

I fully support all those that are in the "BullPen" section. If they are going to market a section of the stadium as the do the area, then they should follow through. Though I do not sit in the "BullPen" I can certainly appreciate the spirit they embody. The group of people in our section 114 rows A,B,and some of C have become great friends and cheer as heartily as I am sure many other parts of the stadium cheer. Also in out section are about six seats that are owned by companies and the people that sit in those seats mostly sit there and do nothing and usually show up about the start of the second quarter and leave at the start of the fourth quarter. There have been a few times in the last six years that we have been told to sit down, and it has caused some minor issues from time to time. Actually last year some of the onfield staff gave myself and another fan in our section the defense sign to hold up at opportunities to help the defense, some people complained behind us and we had to go and talk with stadium personnel to get both sides of the story. Bottom line was the Texans staff said in the end the sign was to big as stated in their regulations. Well they are the ones that made the signs, talk about crazy. If you want to sit the whole game, either stay home and watch, or find a section that sits the whole game (which hopefully there are few). Anyway you all have my full support.

Stephanie, you are kinder than I. I didn't bother to ask the Texans why they would kick out someone for standing up. I just informed them that the staff acted egregiously. The nacho eating sitters who complained about a fan standing should have been booted immediately period/non negotiable/end of discussion.
Seattle even has jerseys with the #12 on them and the name 'Fan.' Now, that is promoting a home field advantage.
Seems to me that the Texans will lose more fans in the seats if they make standing against the rules. The sitters come once a season - or once in a lifetime - and don't return. We, who stand and cheer whether in the Bull Pen or elsewhere, will be in the stands win or lose. If selling tickets is the goal, then allowing folks to stand should be part of the path to that goal.
This isn't a tennis match, it is a football game. Be prepared to stand up or stay at home.

Texans aren't the only team who pulls stuff like that. A friend of mine had season tickets last year to the Chicago Bears. At the end of the season he received a letter from the team saying he wouldn't be allowed to buy tickets again because he stood up and cheered too much. In the letter they listed off different situations they would stand and cheer, like defensive 3rd downs for example. Now this was in the upper deck and not in a section in which they promoted standing, but they weren't standing for the entire game either.

Maybe you could just switch seats with the guy or girl who just wants to sit? I mean if it's just one person complaining? Once they get in front of you then you can stand. I mean if you can get the entire first row to stand, then doesn't everyone else have to stand? So the ushers will have to kick the first row out, then the second row continues their stand, until they are kicked out, etc. You'd be taking a stand (bad pun, sorry).

That's the NFL today. screww the fans for the corporate money. Every years I put more distance between me and the NFL, and especially here in San Diego where the probability of leaving for good is high. When it happens to the fans here I won't care anymore, and that way I won't miss the NFL very much.

It seems to me there are more sitters showing up for football games...as a Pat's season ticket holder for the past 27 years I am experiencing this trend more and more..our response go home and watch on TV. Shame on the Texan's for allowing a loyal fan to be treated like that...Look around the league no one is sitting in NE, Indy, Dallas, Green Bay, or Pittsburg...they probably are in San Diago but then they cry alot there too!!!

As a 16 year Atlanta Falcons season holder I have had similar experiences with "sitting fans.' I sit it the visiting team end zone with the same group on fans. We also have a tradition of standing up and chearing on our defense and also have a series of chears for certain situations. Until recently there were many seats around us filled with casual single game fans who were interested in watching the game and not participating. When asked kindly I would take my seat as long as the team had moved past the 50 towards the other endzone. I tried not to argue but this thought always entered my mind:
Why did you come to the game?
To watch the game? Well up until recently the Falcons had sold out all their games so they were also available on local TV, if you want to 'watch' the game.
or For the experience? Well...excited Fans are part of that experience. Noise from the fans adds to the Home Field Advantage. The louder the chears the harder it is for the other team to focus. Join in...you might just enjoy it.

The Texans should be ashamed of this. I am sorry that this happened to you, Overalls.
Someone mentioned to me that the Texans should place stickers on the back of the seats stating "Standing allowed" and I agree. They could take it a step farther and really show they mean business by having an ad compaign promoting the Bull Pen traditions and mentioning that the Bull Pen is no place to sit.

Starting to get "bought by my company" seat users in the dawg pound also....in other words, browns fans who can no longer afford to come to the games are selling their tickets to highest bidder, sometimes that is the guy who runs mortgage company or insurance company, he or she hands em out to once in a lifetime game attendees...who want to sit and chat about raising kids during a game...get a life...the pound is rowdy, not violent but rowdy...

I'm sure the Texans will make this right. The front office is very responsive. Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between the front office and the game day staff. We saw problems this year alone with parking staff and ushers, and I had problems last year with the pat down staff.

This reminds me of the time my then 7 year old daughter was asked to stop cheering at a Pacers game by the people sitting three seats from us. They thought she was to loud. When they told the usher he just looked at them as if they were insane. He then asked them to relocate!
