Pro Football Hall of Famer Earl Campbell barely follows the NFL anymore, and he's not real happy with the league, seeing as it left him crippled and his old team, the Houston Oilers, doesn't exist anyway. But there's one thing that makes him even more unhappy: Patriotgate. Here's what he had to say about Patriots coach Bill Belichick and the videotaping of opponents' signals, according to Chad Peters of the San Antonio Express-News.
"I think if I was the commissioner, I would fire him," Campbell said. "And I'd also fix it so he couldn't coach in the NFL anymore. And those teams that played (and won three Super Bowls), I'd consider that a tie. The other teams would get a ring, too. .
"We try to teach our young kids how to be honest and all that," Campbell said, "and here we've got grown people. ..... (Belichick) is no better than those guys in baseball taking them steroids.
"..... If they win the Super Bowl, I think there should be an asterisk by the Patriots' name. And if they don't win, I still think there should be an asterisk by their name. Because that's wrong. A lie is a lie."
Yeah, not so sure about that idea to give Super Bowl rings to the 2001 Rams, 2003 Panthers and 2004 Eagles. (Has the whole world forgotten that the 2003 Panthers did their fair share of cheating too?)
Overall, though, I think Campbell is one of those people who has given so much to the game of football that his opinion is worthy of respect, even if it comes off as a tad harsh.

Great Piece:
I don't agree with Earl Campbell because I think it's way too harsh. But he has some points. people are so wrapped up in steroid talk, and don't seem to want to give an inch. We need to start drawing the line somewere.
What's interesting though, is the number of "fans" who are probably going to get on here and badmouth Earl Campbell, the ultimate team player, who never complained, and gave everything he had for the game of football.
I don't agree with him, but he definitely has more to say than I do.
Watch the armchair sissies who haven't played football since high school try to tear down a man who ran over folks like a MACK TRUCK!
(Remember that NFL Films highlight spoof of him to the tune of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"?)

Earl Campbell was a great player, for sure. I'm not entirely certain why this means we should give any added weight to his admittedly uninformed opinion.
I mean, given the comments from current players in the wake of Spygate that showed a total lack of understanding about what was at issue, I'm not sure why anybody wants to pay attention to the opinions of former ones who don't even follow the game anymore.

For the one millionth time people, the Patriots DID NOT CHEAT.
The NFL has said that although the Patriots violated league rules by videotaping From the sidelines, it did not affect the outcome of the game. Therefore no cheating occurred.
It was determined that the Patriots use the video for post game analysis. Videotaping is used by many NFL teams to study their opponents.
The NFL punished the Pats with fines and loss of a draft pick to send a message to the rest of the league to knock off the sideline videotaping.
The Pats broke league rules. That was wrong. The NFL decide to make an example of them. So the Pats got what they deserved. Case closed.
Videotaping opposing teams signals is not the huge advantage that most eveyone is making it out to be. To say that the secret of the Patriots success, or any teams success, is due to videotaping opposing teams is just ridiculous.

Of course it's an advantage to have the defensive signals of the other team! You will then be able to pick up tendencies and patterns of the opposing playcalling. When you have to play a team 2, sometimes 3 times a year, it helps ALOT!
Imagine knowing that almost everytime the Pats line up in Bunch formation, the opponent will call a Cover 2. Or everytime the opponents play man on first down, they shift to a zone package on second and third down. THAT IS A HUGE ADVANTAGE!!!!!
The Patriots ALWAYS had the least talented offensive players when they faced off against the other AFC teams, yet somehow they managed to overcome this huge lack of talent (with average crucial athletes such as Reche Caldwell, Troy Brown, Antoine Smith, Kevin Faulk, Jabar Gaffney, David Patten, etc.) Yet somehow they always managed to outCOACH the other team.
For someone to say that stealing the opponents defensive signals ISN'T AN ADVANTAGE, would PROVE that they have never played football in their entire life unless its on a videogame. If someone EVER tells you that it doesn't help, immediately stop listening to them about football FOREVER as they will have no credibility in anything they say about football from now on, making such a dumb statement as that.

To post #5: "For the one millionth time people, PATRIOTS DID NOT CHEAT." Hmmm, the NFL fined Bill Belichick a fairly substantial sum of money (given what he's paid, it wasn't much more than a slap on the wrist) and New England had to forfeit its top draft pick in the upcoming draft because they did nothing wrong?
As for post #1 - which at least was not a mean-spirited post (unlike the all-too-typical IDIOTS - like post #2 - that use these comments blogs to spew out their hate-filled, beside-the-point diatribe ), I TOTALLY disagree that Campbell's persuasion that Belichick should be fired and banned from football is "way too harsh." This nation is in a precipitous moral free-fall precisely because we have for the past 25 years chosen to call sin by its rightful name and opted instead to celebrate whores, pimps and homosexuals, declare criminals "innocent" and victims "guilty," and look the other way as the Power Elite in our midst sells the common man/woman out for profit. Presicely because we have nationally lost our moral compass, the Belichicks and Vicks and Clemens and Bonds of the world freely and arrogantly strut about doing everything they can to gain a comeptitive davantage over the noble souls among them that choose to STAND UP FOR TRUTH/FAIRNESS.
I proudly join in Campbell's call for Belichick's ouster and BAN from the NFL!

Although I disagree, I think there are good points from Earl. I think you also have a good point that people have given a lot of ground to what is wrong. But it seems to be uneven.
If the whole world can decry Barry Bonds as a cheater, then every pithcer he faced, and every team he faced is the same if there was steroids involved.
SO how is Belicheck different than Bonds? If he purposely received an unfair advantage, the HE CHEATED. And he is no better.
SO yeah, he should receive * all day long, but I don't think he should be banned for life.
Just my opinion...

To the Pats fans who say that violating the league rules isn't cheating; Go to the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary and look up 'cheat'.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/
CHEAT
intransitive verb
1 a: to practice fraud or trickery b: to violate rules dishonestly
Belichick is, by definition, a cheater.

I didn't say that. Please read my previous post.
"6.Videotaping opposing teams signals is not the huge advantage that most eveyone is making it out to be."
Of course videotaping signals is an advantage, but not a huge one. Many teams videotape opponents signals for postgame analysis. Why do you think teams have 4-5 signal callers? Why do you think teams routinely change their signal calling from game to game? Because they Know that their signals are being watched, recorded, and decoded for future use against them. How do they know this? They're doing it too.
Let me put it this way: It is next to impossible for a team to use the videotaped signals of an opponent in the same game.(simply not enough time to decode them) Lets say the team has decoded its opponents signals for use in their next matchup. By that time the opponent has changed their signal calling.
Videotaped signals are used by teams to figure out an opponents tendencies. They do not provide an exact blueprint of an opponents plays. That is why videotaping of an opponents signals is an advantage but not a huge one.
Look, the Patriots violated league rules. that was wrong. They deserved to be fined and lose a 1st round pick.
However, they did not gain some huge advantage that no other team had. Nor, did the videotaping affect the outcome of any games. Hence they did not cheat.
Just answer me this:
If the videotaping of signals is such a huge advantage, and the secret of the Pats success, and they are no longer allowed to videotape; how can they possibly be 13-0 this year?
Let me guess. They're still cheating, right? Now that would be a dumb statement.

Um.. Excuse me. Belichick misinterpreted the rules. Thank you very much. So technically, he violated the rules ignorantly.
It was an honest mistake.

Whether or not the game is affected by the cheating is irrelevant as to whether or not the cheating occurs.
"They would have won/lost anyway" is not even an excuse, let alone a counter-argument.
Patriots fans are getting pretty smug about themselves this year.

Earl Campbell talks about being a role model for kids.He says Bellichick is not one, well guess what:
Is he kidding? Remember his commercials for SKOAL chewing tobacco? They used to show him in his Oilers uniform running and then he would say, "Skoal,Brother."
He took money for those commercials. Is there a more disgusting health habit that exists? How many young kids began the habit because of him??
He was a good running back, poor role model, period.
Bellichick wins games and that pisses people off, END OF STORY!!
Have your favorite team beat him, if they can.
