Say this for Jay Mariotti: He'll take shots at anybody. I know a lot of sports fans who think Mariotti is too negative, but sometimes negativity is warranted, and on those occasions, you can count on Mariotti to deliver it.
One of those times when negativity is warranted is when former Bears coach Mike Ditka runs a charity with a disgraceful record when it comes to, you know, actually doing charitable things -- it spends ten times as much money on golf tournaments as it does on donations to the needy. Mariotti's column about that was, correctly, full of contempt for the Ditka charity.
But we've yet to hear Ditka sufficiently explain how a self-named trust fund could produce so much money and donate so little. Worse, the same trust fund reportedly invested a staggering $715,000 to stage three charity golf tournaments -- with some of that money earmarked as appearance fees for athletes and other celebrities. How in the name of hypocrisy does any human being, particularly any former NFL player, require a fee to attend a charity event helping needy former NFL players? And how does Ditka, the all-time tough guy, not demand anything but free appearances from celebrities and cronies? But other reporters in Chicago wouldn't take Ditka on.
As Steve Rhodes of the Beachwood Reporter notes, most of the local news coverage in Chicago has been full of excuses for Ditka, as if he couldn't possibly be expected to know the goings-on of the Mike Ditka Hall of Fame Association Trust Fund. The thrust of the media coverage, outside Mariotti, has been that Ditka has raised attention for an important issue, and that's more than enough.
But it's not enough. Ditka said he was raising money for injured former NFL players, and in reality he was raising money, mostly, for golf tournaments. That's unacceptable. Ditka is extremely popular in Chicago (those Saturday Night Live skits were exaggerations, but only slightly), but that's no reason for the media to turn a blind eye when Ditka screws up. On this story, more journalists should have followed Mariotti's lead.

The Chicago media is well versed at "turning a blind eye". Just look at Chicago politics! Oh please Mayor Daley, run for your 717th term in office, and bring all those straight lace Alderman with you!!!!

I love Jay Mariotti's work because he is one of the
few sports writers who has the "Sports-Balls" to
say what has to be said.

Ditka is a solid, strait up guy. That is why Chicago likes him. Mike never said that he was perfect....he only said that he cared enough to lend his reputation and sweat to helping old NFL players in need.
Reporters love to criticize the good works of others while they do next to nothing positive.Large sums of money went from Ditka's foundations to help NFL retirees. Might more have gone if the foundations were more tightly managed...possibly. However, the reality is that large sums of money WERE distributed.Let's rejoice in that reality.
As far as Mariotti and his opinion goes. His character is such that I would expect that if he ever wrote a check to a charitable activity ( a big if) he first would issue a press release praising his virtue and would then let the check bounce.
Who do you think Chicago citizens really care about

Ditka disbanded his charity and admitted that he had over extended himself and did not give the charity the attention it needed.

Give Dikta a chance. Seems to me that any funds raised by fundraising of sorts, only demands that you give 15-maybe 20% of what you rake in to the organization.
Why not check out MD yearly fundraiser ? Or any other for that matter. Race for the cure etc.
Love ya Mike, hang in there.

Hay give him a break Mariotti. Ditka could have did five golf tournaments and could have been in the [w]hole, so to speak. Then he would have had to charge the crippled ex-players to cover the slack with the pack..
So lighten up Jay, this is a whole new area we are in. And Iron Mike has a whole new meaning like ‘pass the five iron please’.

The original numbers in the first report were wrong, Ditka did come out and explain everything. This "reporter", if we can call him that..lol, needs to get his facts stright before making any comments.
AOL sports has alway been a joke, nothing seems to change. That goes for TMZ as well, another piece of crap that AOL seems to enjoy using for information...lol
I guess that makes AOL a steaming pile as well....lmao

Ditkas' dont mess with me attitude must be working, because if what is reported about how he runs the money is in deed true, then you know dogon well, the sports media would have been all over this. Somebody got their feelings hurt, and spreading rumors(alledgedly) is their pay back. Ok ESPN, now do your thing.

Da coach probably didn't monitor the details of the charity as well as he should have but when he set up the fund he hired others to do that and allowed the use of his name and prestige to raise money and awareness. I've heard him speak on the subjecvt of the plight of former NFL plauers and believe that he is passionate about helping. He has also donated a lot of money directly. Marriotti has hated Chicago teams and especially Ditka since he arrived from Detroit. Everything he writes and says is biased against Ditka and Chicago. I challenge anyone to find an article penned by Marriotti in praise of any Chicago team or coach icluding Michael Jordan, Walter Payton or Ditka.

A man would not do this. a low life male might but not a MAN who respects himself and his former status in his profession. A man says he is going to do something then he does it to the best of his ability and gives it everything he has. Has Mike Ditka done that? If not maybe he is a fraud like so many others. if you want to know how to be a football player look to Mike Ditka but if want you want to be a man, a man who does what he says he will, maybe you need to look elsewhere. The man played a great game on the field of football. But in real life what kind of game is he playing with the lives of former hurt NFL players and those that want to help them? If he did what one commentator said then maybe he is making up for some of the mistakes but let's see how good he is at it. time will tell but so many of our heros on the filed are shams in real life. It is a shame.

If Ditka and his fellow stars of the 60s and 70s had stood up for themselves like the players of the 80s did (going on strike for pay and benefits) they wouldn't be asking for handouts. They lacked foresight and the courage to engage management and they are paying for it now.
