Jason Whitlock Thinks Herm Edwards Deserves Two More Years, Fans Disagree

Okay, it sounds like Jason Whitlock is due a drug test. The cuddly Kansas City Star columnist who, when not taking shots at Mike Lupica, is usually gunning with both barrels at the hometown Chiefs, shows a kinder, gentler side in Saturday's edition:
Now that there is a consensus building that King Carl must be dethroned, let me lend my voice to the people defending Herm Edwards. This city has not been fair to Herm.
Alright, maybe he's not completely kinder and gentler -- he's still taking shots at Chiefs' president Carl Peterson, and I'm sure if given the chance, he'd give Priest Holmes the business too.

Anyway, Whitlock makes the case that Herm's "run-and-punt offense" needs more time -- specifically four years -- before the torch and pitchfork crowd should swing into action.
His resume demands that. The fact that he backed this franchise into the playoffs last season dictates that we remain patient. The problems he inherited thanks to the staleness of Peterson's personnel department and coaching-staff leftovers make a compelling case to stick with Herm for at least two more years.
I like Whitlock and I like Edwards, but I can't envision a scenario -- save the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl this year -- where it makes sense to keep Edwards around for another two. While he might be swell at giving motivational speeches, he's atrocious at managing the clock and timeouts, which, as you might've noticed, is kind of important.

If the goal is to back into the playoffs every other season and then promptly lose in the first round, then, yeah, Herm's the guy. But if the Chiefs are looking for something more than that, it'll have to be with someone else. I'm not advocating Herm should be canned at the end of the season, but if the right head coach should become available, it wouldn't be a completely ridiculous notion to go in that direction.
