With the upcoming Texans-Saints game matching Mario Williams versus Reggie Bush, Houston Chronicle columnist Jerome Solomon did a do-over of the 2006 draft. Here it is:
#1 Houston Texans - Joseph Addai, RB
#2 New Orleans Saints - Maurice Jones-Drew, RB
#3 Tennessee Titans - Vince Young, QB
#4 New York Jets - Jay Cutler, QB
#5 Green Bay Packers - Laurence Maroney, RB
#6 San Francisco 49ers - A.J. Hawk, LB
#7 Oakland Raiders - Reggie Bush, RB
#8 Buffalo Bills, Donte Whitner, SS
#9 Detroit Lions, Ernie Sims, LB
#10 Arizona Cardinals, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, T
Hmmm. Redrafts are always hard because of what you should consider. Marketing? The failures or injuries of other players on the team yet to happen? And whether these players would have the same success for the redrafted team as they do on their current team.
For example, if the Texans knew for a fact that even after working with Gary Kubiak, David Carr was going to struggle as much as he did, they wouldn't have renewed his contract in February 2006 for three years. With no David Carr in the picture, the Texans would have had significantly more fan pressure to pick quarterback, and specifically Vince Young with the first pick in that draft. Nationally, NFL fans thought that the Texans should have picked Reggie Bush, but in Texas the sentiment was mostly behind Young.
In addition, with the Titans picking Young, it's allowed Bud Adams to make significant marketing inroads in Texas. There's a group of Texans fans in Austin who are at war with the Austin CBS affiliate, forming a website called KEYE42Sucks.com for choosing to show Titans games instead of Texans games when there is a timing conflict.
Reliant Stadium would have been burnt to the ground had a quarterback-less Texans taken Joseph Addai over Vince Young, even looking at this in retrospect, and with the struggles Young has had this season. Could Addai live up to the pressure of being not-VY? You also have to ask the question of whether Addai could have thrived with David Carr as the quarterback of his team versus Peyton Manning.
Sometimes when analyzing drafts, we fail to take into account what situations guys are put in. In my mind, in the NFL especially, there are very few players who would thrive no matter what the situation and fit.
In a redraft, the Texans certainly wouldn't have been in the running to chose 2006 Defensive Rookie of the Year, middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans. With the struggles the Texans defense has had with having few defensive playmakers, it is hard to envision how catastrophic it would have been without a Ryans running the show.
I have a hard time believe that Reggie Bush still wouldn't go into the second spot. Even with some of the difficulties he has had so far, he brought such energy and enthusiasm to a franchise that needed to sell some tickets under a difficult situation.
Looking at the 2006 redraft list as a whole, you wonder where a DROY Ryans is or perhaps Marcus McNeill, the Chargers' left tackle. Arguably if you are looking and this year and last together, McNeill has had a better two years than D'Brickashaw Ferguson.
Truly, for a draft which was considered as talented as any in recent years, both the top 10 and the top 10 redraft is not particularly great as a group. Of course, it is still pretty early in their careers, and many of these players are obviously on rebuilding teams.
For example it would be interesting to see Texans defensive end Mario Williams' play if he played on a team that had other experienced talented linemen, and played for a defensive coordinator with a track record of success. Even with his play this season, I think he would have been a top ten pick in retrospect. Or to see if it made any difference at all if Vince Young was on a team that had a more talented set of receivers.
Marketing considerations aside and based only on football, if I held the first pick of last year's draft, I would want to trade down. It's just hard for any rookie to be worth that much money. However, as I've explained before, a trade down in the 2006 draft would have been difficult to accomplish.
So do you have any further comments on this particular redraft? Or would you like to offer your own redraft?

If Tennessee truly could redo the draft, they'd take Leinart.

A few comments:
Ferguson has had some trouble keeping weight. Arguably, in their short careers, Marcus McNeill has performed better at left tackle. The Texans did draft a promising left tackle in the third round of 2006, Charles Spencer. He was looking good until he suffered a fluke injury. Such is the luck of the draft.
Patrick Willis was in the 2007 draft class. If you wanted to draft a LB, the 2006 DROY DeMeco Ryans would be a good choice. Smart, sure tackler, solid team leader.
Thanks all for reading and commenting.

I am baffled that analysts consider Jay Cutler above Matt Lienart. We have seen how the JC route has worked (or not worked!) in Denver ...

If I were the Houston Texans I would have picked Vince Young because he is a Texas native and his jersey would be a hot seller. He would have been the saviour the franchise wanted.

Here's my take:
#1 Houston Texans - QB Vince Young- The worst passer of the 3 QB's, but still a much better choice than Carr. He would've brought the homefield advantage Reliant Stadium has been lacking since day 1. There wouldnt have been an empty seat in any game he played.
#2 New Orleans Saints - RB Joseph Addai- At this point, a better back than Bush, and an LSU guy, who better to help the rebuilding stage in N'ollins??
#3 Tennessee Titans - QB Matt Leinert- He'd be playing in the same system in which he won both the Heisman and the National Championship. Not a weak-armed QB as most people said, just the weakest of the three. The best passer of the three.
#4 New York Jets - Maurice Jones-Drew- Paired with Leon Washington, these 2 would form a formidable RB tandem.
#5 Green Bay Packers - LB A.J. Hawk- So far, he has done everything expected of him. No reason to change here.
#6 San Francisco 49ers - CB Antonio Cromartie. Picked off Peyton Manning THREE(!) times in one game. Has more TD's than Shaun Alexander. Has played much better (and cheaper I might add) than Nate Clements. Simply, one of the best young corners in the game.
#7 Oakland Raiders - RB Reggie Bush- Probably would have done even worse behind Oakland's O-Line, but just having him on the field would improve the rest of the offense.
#8 Buffalo Bills - SS Donte Whitner- One of the more criticized picks, Whitner is one of the most underrated and overlooked safeties in the game. Good pick by Buffalo.
#9 Detroit Lions - LB Ernie Sims- A bright spot last year on a porous Detroit D.
#10 Arizona Cardinals - OL D'Brickashaw Ferguson- With their turnstyle O-line, there's no way the Cardinals pass the Brick by at #10. He would've been a major improvement over 2001 bust Leonard Davis.
Another name to throw into the first round- 6'8" TE Leonard Pope out of Georgia. Compared to first rounders Vernon Davis & Marcedes Lewis- Davis averages 9.9 per catch, Pope 10.5 (Lewis slightly better at 10.9). Davis has 1 touchdown, Lewis a whopping 0. Pope has 4, despite having Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin on either side of him.

Four running backs in the top 10, and no wide recievers. Oh dear.
Number of running backs taken in the top 10 of the draft in the last ten seasons, with number of WRs in brackets and number of OTs in square brackets:
2007: 1 (2)
2006: 1 (0)
2005: 3 (3)
2004: 0 (3)
2003: 0 (2)
2002: 0 (0)
2001: 1 (2)
2000: 2 (3)
1999: 1 (2)
1998: 2 (0)
Average: 1.1 (1.7)
RB is an easy position to play in terms of scheme so rookies can make an impact straight away. That doesn't mean that four RBs would be drafted in the top 10. Santonio Holmes or Marques Colston would probably be top-10 picks in a redraft. Marcus McNeil certainly would be.

Come to think about, here is what I would've suggest:
1. Texans: Santoino Holmes or Marques Colston
2. Saints: Maurice Drew-Jones
3. Titans: Matt Leinart
4. Jets: Antonio Cromartie
5. Packers: Reggie Bush
6. 49ners: Mario Williams
7. Raiders: Vince Young
8. Bills: Donte Whitner
9. Lions: AJ Hawk
10. Cardinals: D'Brickashaw Ferguson
From looking at the other posts, most of you have the Texans taking QBs Leinart or Young. They should've taken Holmes or Colston with their pick. If they was looking for a QB, Kellen Clemens would've been available for them in the 2nd round of the draft.

And if they wanted a receiver, Colston was available in 7th round......if they weren't going QB, their next move would have been O-Line, not WR
