Chargers fans must wonder what they did to deserve this fate. The team was 14-2 last season, post-season participants in two of the last three years, and what did that get head coach Marty Schottenheimer for his troubles? Canned, that's what.
Now, under the "leadership" of Norv Turner, San Diego is 4-4 with virtually the same team Schottenheimer left behind. That team, by the way, includes 11 Pro Bowlers. But expecting Norvell not to muck up a good thing is like asking Philip Rivers not to have a conniption after tossing a pick -- it ain't happenin'.
But that doesn't make the fans feel any better. Luckily, the San Diego Union-Tribune gives them a forum to vent their frustrations. Some of my favorites following yesterday's loss to the Vikings:
The Chargers need to play someone on defense who can tackle. I suggest Kasim Osgood. I also think Antonio Cromartie could take a few snaps on offense."The good news: San Diego is tied with Kansas City for first place in the division. The bad news: Norv is still the coach. And as long as that doesn't change, we'll probably be hearing a lot more from Al Clavin in Carlsbad, and Dave Grosch in Poway. Thanks, A.J.
- AL CLAVIN, Carlsbad
"I now know what I want for Christmas: the 2006 Chargers team. The game yesterday gave us no tackling, no blocking, no inspiration and no Antonio Gates. They were outplayed in every way. It's going to be a very looooong year."
- DAVE GROSCH, Poway

Its sad when a team with Tarvaris Jackson as QB beats you handily. Its worse when you have the longest play in NFL history and that's not the biggest record that got broken in that game.

We (Chargers) can resolve all problems with four quick moves. 1, trade Rivers for Brees, 2, fire Norvell and reinstate Marty, 3, get a good all pro line backer, try Donnie Edwards and last but not least fire A.J. (Arrogant Jackass). Then all will be right in Chargerville.

Yeah, so is Mike Tomlin, and so is Wade Phillips, and so did Eric Mangini, Sean Payton, and Herm Edwards last year. In the NFL today, plenty of coaches come in and have success their first year, ESPECIALLY when the team was successful the previous year and is STILL IN TACT and has had FEW INJURIES to deal with (Eric Parker, Jamal Williams for a few games, Nick Hartwick - nothing more than your avg team faces).
The track record is clear: Norv Turner's not a good head coach.

We have had season tickets since the Bolts came to San Diego, and last season was what every Bolt's fan has ever dreamed of, less of course the big let down to the Pats, and I was certain that the players would be coming out this year with something to prove. But it seems that the only thing being proved to us now is that AJ Smith made the biggest mistake by hiring Norv. With all our talent, we need a coach that can keep the team on fire and strive to be a dominant force like the Pats & Colts. TOO BAD FOR US.

After reading a few of the other blogs, I think I know how to help our offense. Norv: Why don't you put Gates & Chambers as wide outs, Turner in the slot and Neil & LT in the backfield every play, then let Rivers pick and choose who gets the ball. That might make most LB's go crazy on who to double team. You've got the talent, use em!!!!

The firing of Marty Schottenheimer and replacing Marty with Norv Turner is one boneheaded blunder that Charger fans have to tolerate this year.

As long as the Spanos family own the Chargers, bonehead mistakes will be made. From accusing Kellen Winslow of faking a career ending injury, firing Don Coryell, drafting Ryan Leaf, trading or not signing team leaders such as, Seau...Edwards...Harrison, taking a decade to find a QB after Fouts retired etc. and the unbelievable selection of head coaches hired until MartyBall. Firing him AND letting both coordinators go is totally insane, unless your purpose is not to win. Just maybe, their end game is to go back to LA. If Chula Vista or Oceanside won't give them a stadium
... see what happens then.
