"Win any way as long as you can get away with it. Nice guys finish last."
- Leo Durocher
In the wake of The Beatdown, some NFL folks are kinda curious about why, exactly, the Patriots needed to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns against the Redskins when they were already leading by 38 points. My guess: Matt Cassel needed the confidence boost.
On this afternoon's Outside the Lines, ESPN's Michael Smith discussed the Patriots' preferred method of victory (bludgeoning), and the reaction around the league.
I got a feeling it's going to get worse before it gets better for Patriots' opponents. Unless...

we probably wouldn't be having this discussion if the redskins didn't quit on the game in the second quarter.

Anyone for the slaughter rule raise your hands. Waht is this pop warner? These are paid professionals that play to win not to lay down and say ok we are ahead enough No one complained when the Ram, the self annoited Greatest Show on Turf were killing teams by 30 and 40 and how bout those cherished Colt teams of couple years ago. Killing everyone by 30 and 40. Denver in the elway days, Killing teams by 30 and 40 at Denver. These are paid professionals. I want to see my team go at all costs and work on things. 4 and 2 up by 40 go for it, you never know when you are in a game tied and you need to do that. The other teams should strap it on and have there players and coaches do a better job and no quit like the Redskins did yesterday in the second quarter. The Pats had all reseves in the game in the 4th quarter.

It only gets better for the Patriots! They hold the first-round draft choice of the San Francisco 49rs whose record is two wins and five losses.

question for you pats fans.... and don't start thumping your chest screamin and hollering "The game is 4 quarters!! or "If you don't like it stop it"
what if brady got hurt in yesterdays game at the end when the game was obviously out of reach or for any game for that matter where they obviously don't need him in... would you be mad at belichik or keep screaming on how your team needs to dominate every min of the game?? something tells me the latter will not come up....
obviously anyone can get hurt at anytime.. but wouldn't it sting a little more if it was a cheap shot in the closing min of a game when its already out of reach?? get the homer goggles off guys, thats more of a stupid thing to do rather than classless (although classless isn't too far fetched)

Give me a break!! Bellicheck did what he's supposed to do, PLAY! Had the Redskins (hereforth known as b1tch8s) had come to play then the score would have reflected it. What they really need is some pacifiers, baby wipes and pampers to go with those whines I hear coming from FedEx Field.

Hmmm, Who is better?
Is Bellichick a greater coach or is Brady a greater quarterback??
Oh, I get it, they are both great!! Hall of Fame!!
Baseball teams keep scoring as long as they can. Pro basketball games are constantly lopsided. Doesn't anyone remember the 1985 Superbowl where that jerk Ditka stuck it to the Pats by about 50 points. Putting the "Fridge" Perry in to embarass the Pats.Pats fans did not like that, but Ditka did not care. Things have changed now. Those coaches that tried to crucify Bellichick for "spygate" instead of admitting that they do it too--WHICH THEY DO--Coaches still cover their mouth when they talk to
upstairs.Hmmm? At least Jimmy Johnson admitted that he used to have an intern pick up the trash of the opposing coaches after the games, to use the info in the next meeting with that team.
Maybe the Redskins were overrated. Do ya think?
Brady for President!!

Wondering if all the complainers here ever actually PLAYED football.
Taking it easy on another team, no matter what the score, demeans the other team, and the game as well. Athletes are taught from day one to give maximum effort the entire game, no matter when you get to play, no matter if you're a starter or fourth string.
The 'Skins had some great teams in the 70s and 80s and beat many teams badly, from what I can recall. Don't think their fans or players were complaining then.
The 'Skins were beaten by a far superior team; the team, and especially their fans, just have to deal with it and continue to play (and root) harder.

Running up the score is always seen as a lack of class. He is just mad that since his team was caught cheating , that he's going to show everyboody that the legacy isn't tainted. I think it says something that a team that didn't need to cheat -did.

2 weeks ago I thought, " Could the Patriots be this good"? Now I ask, "can they be this classless?" Watch someone take a cheap shot at Brady when they've run up the score again. And for Bellicheat to stand at the press conference and in his deadpan voice ask " What was I supposed to do kick a field goal"? Yeah, Bill, you were.

With all the hurt feelings about the Pats winning 52-7 because the
Washington defense couldn't stop anything the pats were doing I have
some suggestions to make those in agony feel better.1) Mercy
rule--games end when a team is up 30.2) If Brady stays in the game up
over 30 he can't throw right handed.3) The Pats are penalized one
player per point over 30. They're up 33, they play with 8 guys on
the field.4) With all the self-esteem loss over this no wide
receivers allowed onto the field when up over 30.5) It's established
the Skins' fans believe the Pats quitting playing hard is more
respectful to the Skins team than the Pats playing hard for 60
minutes.6) Force the team ahead by 30 points to play using their
cheerleaders.7) No games scheduled played between teams of unequal
ability. The Skins go to the "B" league.
Hope this helps ease the sting.
Bill
