Thank God Priest Holmes is such a team player. Otherwise, we'd never be exposed to his nuggets of wisdom, surely voiced through the media to make us all better people. It's no secret that Larry Johnson is living the Curse of 370 through the first five weeks of the NFL season. Luckily, Holmes is happy to tell us why:
Nobody wanted to come out and say Larry Johnson isn't running well. Nobody, that is, except Priest Holmes.Harmless enough, those words, but anybody else think they're kinda ... I don't know, pretentious? You mean as an NFL running back you have to exploit the other teams' weaknesses and find a way to get yards? Riveting.
"I talk to Larry about being more creative," Holmes said. "I think that's something he needs to work on. When the other team is putting everything to trying to stop you, you can't get frustrated. That's the worst thing you can do. You have to study them and find their weaknesses, and exploit those. There are no excuses. You have to find a way to get yards. And when you get your opening, you have to hit the home run."
The Kansas City Star's Joe Posnanski thinks LJ would be wise to read Holmes' words everyday because "that one paragraph is the essence of what made Priest Holmes a great football player." Of course, Posnanski ripped Johnson a new one last week, so maybe he'll try anything to motivate the two-time 1,700-yard rusher.
Jason Whitlock, I'm guessing, would have fewer nice things to say about Holmes. Still, I take Posnanski's point: in 2001, Holmes rushed for 1,500 yards behind a suspect offensive line; now, LJ is pouting about his poor start. Holmes was undrafted and never felt like he was owed anything; LJ was a first-round pick and former head coach Dick Vermeil suggested he "take the diapers off." Whichever side of the debate you fall, there's one constant: Kansas City is in for a long, long season.

All Larry needs is a good fullback to thump open some running lanes.

Kansas City's offensive line in 2001 was Will Shields, John Tait, Casey Wiegmann, Brian Waters, and Marcus Spears. That doesn't exactly sound "suspect" to me, and it certainly sounds a lot better than the current version. Throw in a quarterback who threw for almost 3,800 yards, and I think the offense in 2001 was a bit better than this year's.
Of course Priest Holmes, man of mystery, who absolutely refused to say or do anything related to the Chiefs for the past two years, is now here to talk shit on players that aren't playing well, when he himself wasn't even in good enough shape to make the active roster at the beginning of the season. It's easy to say what other people should be doing when you know it's not possible that you'll be thrown in there to see what you can do instead..
