The headline in Friday's Chicago Tribune: "Bears Could Get New Blood at QB in '08."
Now there's an idea that makes you think: Hey, this would've been great, say, LAST YEAR. But as everyone remotely affiliated with professional sports is seemingly fond of saying these days: it is what it is. Rex Grossman is in the last year of his rookie deal, and if things continue on this southward trajectory (and why wouldn't they?), it's fair to think that the Bears won't re-sign him, and even if they offered, Grossman might decline.
Anyway, Dan Pompei lists the top candidates for Bears' job in 2008:
* Derek Anderson
* Brian Brohm
* Daunte Culpepper
* Josh McCown
* Donovan McNabb
* Chad Pennington
* Jake Plummer
* Tony Romo
* Chris Simms
* Billy Volek
Jeebus, I'd love to see the guys who didn't make the cut. A couple of thoughts: you know the current quarterback situation is dire when Anderson (will lose Browns job before the season's out) McCown (about to lose Raiders job), Plummer (retired, really into handball), Simms (recovering from spleen surgery) and Volek (red-headed backup) all make the list.
Second, Brohm, McNabb and Romo are such long shots, it makes you wonder what, exactly, Chicago's front office has planned. Or, more importantly, what they've been doing the past few drafts. Good news, though: I hear Kordell Stewart and Erik Kramer are available.

Hey don't knock Eric Kramer. He's one of the best Bears QBs of all time. Then again, that's not saying too much.

Whoever is the quarterback of the Bears needs an offensive line protection and a running attack to keep defenses away from the quarterback unless the new Bears quarterback is like Fran Tarkenton who was a great scrambler.

hmmm that would be interesting to see Plummer as the Bears QB! He has won a lot of games, and though his numbers aren't that great he knows how to not give the game away!
Man, i feel bad for REX! I actually like Rex and think he could... yes could be a decent QB! It sucks in his position, this is really his 2nd year starting under center and the ups and downs of last season were natural for basically a newbee. I think the pressure got to him and killed his potential!!!! Last year was his first full year and when he played good it was because there was no pressure! No SB appearance the previous year. No 1st place in their division. No dominating fore on Defense and specail teams!... this was all happening at the same time. And then BAM! Rex is expected to be perfect! -Not gonna happen for him in his 2nd full year!
Actually it's a shame that the Bears ended up as far as they did last season for Rex! Without all that early /unexpected pressure Rex could have gotten better and more confident in a few years (staying healthy of coures) under a team that wasn't SB quality!
Though i give Rex props for saying that he was fully confident and grounded. Though you can just tell he never was!
Bears, please don't pick up Culpepper!!!! Please please don't!!! I also think Pennington would make a good fit! Especially under a team with a good D!
