Par for the course in a wild Week 1 of the new NFL season. In a matchup of the last two AFC North champions, the Bengals made the least amount of mistakes and held on to a 27-20 win.
The Ravens turned the ball over SIX TIMES ... including on their last possession when a bobbled pass from Kyle Boller [more on that later] to Todd Heap landed in Bengals' DT Michael Myers hands in the endzone to clinch the win for Cincinnati. Boller came in on the Ravens final drive for an injured Steve McNair ... who threw an interception and lost three fumbles [Le'Ron McClain also fumbled, for the Ravens' other turnover]. One McNair fumble was returned by Bengals LB Landon Johnson for a TD.
That wasn't the only mistake. B-more was called for 10 penalties for 86 yards ... including an iffy offensive pass interference call that negated a game-tying TD in the final moments.
The sad thing is they had the Bengals. They had them. The Ravens offense was pretty effective while shutting down the Bengals normally explosive offense. Rudi Johnson was held to 50 yds rushing while Carson Palmer was sailing passes over everyone's heads. Well, not every pass. Palmer did connect with TJ Houshmandzadeh for the go-ahead TD and Chad Johnson [who debuted his weak "Hall Of Fame jacket celebration"] for the game's opening TD.
Story #2 of this game was injuries. The Ravens lost Jonathan Ogden when he re-aggravated his turf toe, Steve McNair to a groin injury and BJ Sams ... while they watched Ray Lewis, Ed Reed [who actually returned a punt for a TD when Sams left the game] and Terrell Suggs deal with various injuries. The Bengals weren't immune, themselves. Shayne Graham's hip pointer acted up again ... while the offensive line had to deal without Levi Jones [who didn't play at all], Willie Anderson and Eric Ghiacuic.
(Hat tip to the Sports Kittens ... pictured above ... for a hilarious poem about the Ravens)
Final Score: Bengals 27-Ravens 20

Is Billick stupid or what. Why would he throw the ball on the goal line 4 times? Run the damn ball. Why are the ravens paying Mcgahee 40 million. How many 3rd and 2's turn into incomplete passes. To sum it up the Ravens will never compete with Indianapolis or New England with billick calling plays and Mcnair at QB.

Although I was pulling for the Bengals, I firmly believe that Todd Heap should have been awarded the game tieing TD in the last seconds. If anything he was the victim of a Bengal penalty and not offensive interference. The Official blew the call and tried to even up his mistake with a questionable call against the Bengals on the succeeding play. The Official should be publicly reprimanded by the NFL this week.

Good idea lets start the season out crying Foul Play to referees that way its easier when the "Who dey anyway" gets beat.

Why do NFL players and fans get frustrated ? After watching the official call offensive pass interference on Baltimore's tight end after he caught the potential game tying TD, it should be obvious. That was way too good of a game to be decided by a lame official. Boller did a nice job for the Ravens but was screwed by the official. I do agree, Billick's play calling was bad at the end.

Don't you just love the "make up call". If an official makes a bad call, he or another crew official trys to right his bad call with another bad call.

I thought that only Philly sports teams had a monopoly on "implode". Didn't they patent that concept some years ago? Are they getting paid royalties from the Ravens?

Heap's catch should have stood, however, Baltimore had another 5 shots inside the 5 after that play and still couldn't get it done. So that the refs "cost them the game" is simply not true. 6 turnovers and the 24 Bengal points scored off of them ultimately cost Baltimore the game.
Where were all the points off those turnovers? Hmm,..well they did score 24 off the turnovers. And despite Baltimore's offensive problems, they still do have one of the best defenses in the league. It's not like running up and down the field on Cleveland and then patting yourself on the back for doing so. They scored enough, got the W, and that's what it's all about!
I thought Baltimore had a poor game plan. The Bengals have notorious problems stopping the run, you just spent 40 mil on a marquee back, and you pass, pass, pass? 6 of 8 plays inside the 5 at the end of the game? 1st and goal at the 3 I would have ran it 4 times if needed (probably only would have taken about two runs in a row). Baltimore fans don't whine about the officials. I would be whining about the team's playcalling.

Can not win, even against an average team like the Bengals, when your going against 33 starters and 2 head coaches.... Greatest Defense of all time will only get glory when Billick is fired..... Surprised he didnt try a flea flicker inside the 2 ......
Did the same thing against the colts last yr.
He should find something hes good at, it surely will never be coaching !!!!!

Hey.....turnovers definitely helped them lose the game. But then again so did the refs. That endzone call against Todd Heap was a "gam-deciding" call. That they "missed" the fist full of jersey was preposterous....and really really bad.
If you look at the numbers.....forget turnovers....the Ravens should have smashed the daylights out of the Bengals. By the numbers they crushed them.....
On the subject of Turnovers....any team with 6 turnovers should have lost a whole lot worst than the Ravens did last night.

There's no doubt that the Ravens should have lost that game due to turnovers.....The Bengals missed several opportunities there, that's for sure.
But it APPEARS....that they didn't... By the numbers, the Ravens should have crushed the Bengals.
AND...that bad call was definitely a game determining call on the part of the ref....but it's not an excuse...the Ravens had every opportunity to score on that drive.

Enough about the refs. Enough about the turnovers. Bottom line is, with all the theatrical nonesense and miscues throughout the game, we can all focus in on the situation that was presented to Billick after the "make up call." 1st AND GOAL FROM THE 5 F*%$^ING YARD LINE. And even worse, 2ND AND GOAL FROM THE 2 YARD LINE. McGahee could've run for 2/3 of a yard 3 times and gotten the game into overtime. Billick is to blame for a ludicrous decision to throw WITH BOLLER. Billick - 95% of the blame - he was trying to make a statement game that the Ravens are more than a grind it out team ON THE LAST PLAY.

Officials did not lose the game, the ravens did. The Bengals played about as poor as you will ever see them play on offense under Palmer and still won by playing hardnosed smashmouth football. Wait until the offense kicks in...

steve freeman the ref. and brian billick the coach lost the game for the ravens.I think the ref. in that game made one of the worst calls I have ever seen in the nfl,the refs in the nfl are making the games swing the way they want them too just like the nba, the nfl should check and make sure steve freeman the ref. didn't have a bet placed in vegas.

I agree that bad call's by the ref's didn't help
but you need to start running the ball inside the
5 and stop all the rediculis penalties and turnover's.
Billick need's to wake up before it's too late.
Your paying Willis McGahee, what 40 mil. and what
about Musa Smith, run the ball.

The call negating Heap's catch was a pretty bad call. For those of you who might have lost count, even had that score stood, it would have only tied the game (presuming the extra point was good.) In addition, after the "make-up" call against Cinci's Williams, the Ravens got to spot it at the three, again, with an entire fresh set of downs. And again they could not get into the end zone in four tries from the three, including Heap not catching the ball that banged off his shoulder. So enough already with the "game deciding" call!! Puhlease!! Ravens still had their own fate in their own hands and 1st and goal at the 3 AFTER that call!! How convenient to overlook this, or the decision to throw at the goal line, or the 6 turnovers, or the catch Heap still coulda (and shoulda) made to tie it up. ALL of these were game deciders (Not to mention it was a gift courtesy of Rudi Johnson to have even been down on the goal line in the first place). Bengals did dodge a huge bullet, and were it not for such a stout Raven defense Cinci might have ran away with this game by the third quarter. After such a poor offensive performance, all those turnovers, some dubious play calling, and a dropped catch on the goal line how could any self respecting Raven fan think the team deserved to win that game. They did everything they possibly could to lose it, did in fact lose it, but want to gloss over their own contributions and just blame the ref (though again, they still could have tied it in spite of the call, and failed in their four additional chances).

My previous post DID NOT blame the refs. It did not blame the turnovers, or Heap or Boller or McNair it blamed BILLICK and I would like to see people agree with me. He is an absolute idiot to not run the ball 4 downs in a row against a porous Bengals D. By porous I will cite this fact: with teams inside the 5, the Bengals have given up 18 TDs in 18 defensive tries. 100 record of failure.....Well until last night. Thanks a lot Billick. Anyone agree Billick is 100 percent to blame? ANYONE?

Bad game, bad turnovers, BAD refs. Makes you wonder if pro football is also going the way of pro basketball. Awful calls and it doesn't take many to turn a game around.
