A less than impressive performance from the Birds in the 'burgh. While the score was clearly in the Steelers favor and the defense looked Swiss cheese-esque throughout, it is, afterall, still the preseason. I'm not super worried, but I'm also not very confident. Some noticeable points.
Weapons - While they didn't put many points on the board, the Birds offense has shown that they have an array of weapons at the disposal of Donovan McNabb. From a three deep backfield to a real solid top four or five receivers, I'm excited to watch this group let loose. Even the backup tight ends have shown they can be weapons. The only major concern for the offense is the status of stud O-lineman Shawn Andrews.
Disappointing Coverage - The defense as a whole last night looked completely average. Pittsburgh was able to find success through the air. The 2007 incarnation of the Birds defense doesn't give you the impression as being a squad to recon with.
Return Game - "He's done just okay." That was Andy's response to how he thinks Jeremy Bloom has faired returning punts and kickoffs during the preseason. In last night's matchup, Greg Lewis was on the field to field two punts and Correll Buckhalter got a chance to take a kickoff. Bloom has showed he can be super quick, but also hasn't shown a tremendous ability to make tacklers miss.
Exciting Player - Jason Avant has had a nice preseason and looks like a guy who can do what it takes to be utilized by McNabb. His big build and number make him look awfully similar to that guy who played a season or so for us back in our Super Bowl days.
Solid Pair of QBs - True Philly fans know what Donovan McNabb is capable of when healthy. He performed well in his second game back from his knee injury and makes me feel confident he'll have a great season. His heir apparent, Kevin Kolb, has been impressive for a rookie. The thing I love about Kolb is the poise he shows in the pocket, not afraid to be patient and to wait for the play to develop. A.J. Feeley may be the Eagles number two quarterback, but Kevin Kolb is the second best QB on the team.
Oy! Oy! Oy! - Sav Rocca has showed enough to supplant incumbent punter Dirk Johnson. If they're equally skilled holders, Sav should make this team. I have a gut feeling Andy Reid is going to disappoint the fans and stick with Dirk. He was also named one of the captains for the evening. A nice gesture for a guy on his way out or a sign of things to come? Ausie! Ausie! Ausie!

Sav should be the punter but if not; put him at linebacker. I bet he tackles better than Gocong

Being an Australian who had Sav in their AFL team for many years, its great to see him get any sort of publicity abroad. Keep it up Sav, we are all behind you!

Sav better be good, he's gonna get a lot of leg time with a team that still has a "suspect" offensive line, which they don't need with "stumble bum" back there and they will see that, defensively, that whole in the middle may turn into a canyon, and IT'S A LOOOONG WAAAY DOWN!

both sav and dirk can give it a boot... but who do you feel more comfortable having to make a tackle when someone burns through the punt coverage? a career kicker, or a guy whose pedigree is tackling sans padding? i know who I'd take.
