When the Giants decided to release Luke Petitgout back in early February, it came as a surprise to everyone. Why would newly appointed General Manager Jerry Reese want to weaken the Giants by getting rid of the rock on the left side of their offensive line? Unfortunately, Giants fans never really got their answer. Until now, that is.After months of fans questioning the move, Reese decided to give some insight into his decision to release the nine-year NFL veteran.
"People are so worried about left tackle . . . I think that's so overrated," Reese said. "People act like Petitgout was the second coming. He never made the Pro Bowl, and I don't think he ever was a first alternate. Now all of a sudden he's the savior? That's ridiculous. I don't think we're that bad off without Luke Petitgout. He was not a star left tackle. He was a solid left tackle on some occasions and other times he wasn't. Luke has been a marginal player for a long time."Ouch. Those are some extremely harsh words coming from a man that constantly preaches "Giants pride and respect." How about some respect for a guy who left everything on the field for eight straight seasons?
Sure, Petitgout was never a Pro Bowler, but he wasn't a marginal player either. He was named to Sports Illustrates All-Pro first team in 2001 and played for a Super Bowl team. He did everything the Giants asked him to do and earned a great deal of respect throughout the NFL.
While I agree that the concern over the left tackle position is a little overrated, I also think it was foolish to let Luke go to the Buccaneers. And I think it was even more foolish to rip a guy who did his very best in New York.

Maybe not ok to rip his effort, he should've just ripped the constant false starting.

The LT situation is a huge deal when we're talking about Eli's confidence in the pocket. While I wasn't the biggest fan of LP, it would have been smart to at least try to trade the guy (is it possible JR did try to trade him?). Having Diehl at LT seriously weakens the line because Diehl is a fantastic guard, and only a serviceable LT. Fortunately he's a good run blocker, so the Giants should be able to spring some good runs to the left. But I'd still like to see the Giants make a move and get an experienced LT out there and get DD back to guard.

LP or I call him at my house "momentum killer". Everytime the Giants O would begin to get things going LP would false start without fail and kill the drive. Jerry's move was great!!! It was about time someone took out the trash.

Calling a marginal player "marginal" isn't a rip. Is calling Mike Vick "black" a racist statement? No. Stop trying to make a problem where there is none. Jerry Reese was a scout when he came to the Giants. He has an eye for talent. If he thinks a player is marginal, why is that news? Why is that a rip? He's using his professional skill and analysis and sharing with the media and fans his assessment of a FORMER player. What's the big deal? It's not like he said Luke sucked @ss. He simply said he was marginal. And with all those drive-killing false start penalties, I'm inclined to agree. But it certainly wasn't a rip.

You can get rid of players without slagging them. No class. I can't imagine that sort of conversation goes well in the locker room.

Saying Floyd Reese has an eye for talent may be slightly inaccurate - The Giants haven't won the big game in forever and many of their recent drafts and moves leave a lot to be desired. The closest thing to a very good draft pick was Shockey, and you don't need a talent scout to say "Hey, that guy is pretty good," but he still needs to overcome his injuries and other issues. Archie Manning may end up being a better QB than Eli, and by that I mean, if Archie suited up today, he'd probably put up better numbers. If I was a current Giant, I'd be a little wary of how this guy might treat me when my run was over. Not exactly confidence-inspiring, to say the least.

Matt C,
I think you mean Jerry Reese, not Floyd of the Titans. Don't forget, Jerry Reese is primarily responsible for bringing in Gibril Wilson, Brandon Jacobs, and Osi Umenyiora. Keep in mind, no talent scout gets them all right.

HA! That's exactly what Reese meant when he talks about "Giants pride and respect." I think, personally, that Reese was speaking out of frustration when he released this statement but it echoes the sentiments of a lot of Giants fans that I know. I mean, how many times does a guy have to false start in a game before we realize that he sucks and was never worth the draft pick we wasted on him? Nine? Ten? I think Luke's record is eleven. And it wasn't like Reese had something nasty to say about every player he cut. You didn't hear him talking stuff about Carlos Emmons who had a solid, albeit disappointing, tenor in E. Rutherford. But Petitgout deserved it, he SUCKED!!! I'm glad someone in the organization finally had the stones to do something about it cause he should've been gone after the disastrous 2004 campaign.

I am sorry to hear any player in the NFL who gives maximum effort criticized. It's a tough league and guys leave a lot of their bodies behind when their career is over. I think Reese is way out of line. He could have just said that he thought the position required an upgrade and this was his decision, correct or not. Having said that, I never thought Luke was all that great. He did keep getting those procedure penalties. The reason was twofold. First, with his bad back he knew he had to get leverage quickly or he was dead. Second, he was incredibly vulnerable to speed rushers who could beat him to the outside and as the edge rushers got better and better over the years it made it that much tougher for him. He had to get out of his stance immediately upon the snap or he was dead, and sometimes his timing was a split second off. The alternative, given his physical limitations, would have been a QB who was on his rear end much of the time. And even when he didn't get procedure penalties, he was getting beaten way too much and costing the team sacks at critical moments. I would have allowed him to go, and think that either Diehl or Whimper could be a more-than-adequate replacement, but when a guy plays for many seasons through the pain of a bad back that seizes on him regularly, and probably will retire with significant damage to his vertebrae, I don't think he deserves verbal diminishment. I love Reese so far, but this wasn't classy at all.
