Joe Gibbs makes $6 million a year as an NFL head coach. He also owns a NASCAR team. That team has said it might not want to sign Dale Earnhardt Jr. because of Earnhardt's sponsorship deal with Anheuser-Busch. Something isn't right here. Does Gibbs have any idea where the Washington Redskins get the money to pay his salary? Does he not understand that beer commercials on television and beer concessions at games put many millions of dollars into the NFL's coffers, and that the millions of dollars in his own bank account are soaked in beer?
Gibbs wouldn't have the money to own his own NASCAR team if the NFL weren't such a profitable endeavor, and the NFL wouldn't be such a profitable endeavor without alcohol. If Gibbs doesn't want to make money off alcohol, there's only one honorable thing for him to do: Resign from the Redskins.

I wish more influential people would make this stand. I personally love those beer commercials, they are smart, funny and the prime example of what good advertising can accomplish. But the fact is beer is one of the nation's leading gateway drugs. Pretty much all media studies agree these commercials are encouraging consumption among the minors watching sporting events and/or TV. Medical studies show the earlier the consumption the (far) greater the risk of addiction or addictive behaviors.
I don't think there will ever be, nor should be, football without beer. But for the health of the general public we need to have sports without beer advertising. We need to stop leading a large percentage of the population into a life of addiction that all too often ends in taxpayers footing the bill for repeated attempts at treatment, or years in prison. And really, would the loss of beer advertising hurt sports, or would some other product step in and take advantage of reaching a hungry, thirsty group of enthusiastic consumers?

He might just not want to link alcohol with driving at 150mph, which is somewhat different to alcohol and the NFL.
I have no problem whatsoever with beer adverts in general but threw a hissy fit when Johnnie Walker starting sponsoring the McLaren F1 team...

I dont know if the author of this article has ever heard of a crime called DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. Where do all the beer drinkers go after the game...oh yeah out to their vehicles get in and start driving. i always leave early just to get away from the traffic problems that slow thinking beer guzzlers create. As for mr. Gibbs' view on alcohol i applaude him for standing up for what he believes. I dont watch NASCAR, because the entire association condones drinking and driving by allowing alcohol to be sponsored on the race vehicles. The money issue is always what the drunkards raise when someone complains about it. However people generally dont pay upwards of 150.00$ a ticket just to drink beer. So its not that they need the beer to watch Football or nascar, if it wasnt available they would not need it. How about "out of sight, out of mind" but hey alcohol addicted people will always want it untill they get help. Perhaps in the future People will wake up and realize that there is more to life than drinking beer at a game or race.

Michael David Smith, you're an idiot.
To follow your logic, anyone who opposes drinking and driving whose business - not the individuals personally, but the people they work for - has any corporate relationship to alcohol should quit their jobs. Brilliant.
Joe Gibbs works in an industry (the NFL) where alchol plays a significant role in television commercials, something complete out of his control.
The NFL's business does not involve driving cars at suicide speeds in front of millions of people in an age where alcohol-related driving deaths continue to be an alarming epidemic.
Gibbs is saying, as the owner of a NASCAR team responsible for hiring drivers, that he's concerned about the message it sends when one of his drivers is flying around the track at 200 miles per hour every Sunday with Budweiser tagged all over his car.
I hate to be redundant, but your posting warrants it: You're an idiot.

My hats off to Gibbs. I have seen whaty alcohol and other spirits can do to SOME individuals. Plus I was raised in a strict Baptist home. Believe it or not I'm an Earnhardt Jr. fan. I wear the red #8 hat's, not the one's with Budweiser on them though.
I know some folks who refuse to have anything to do with any sports celebrity or team due to alcohol. But, I am a life-long sports fan, so I refuse to be like that. My step-son is a Pro Rodeo rider. Rodeo is almost totally funded by alcohol and smokeless tobacco but I still support rodeo and have since he was a little rider. I just do not buy alcohol&tobacco. So, bottome line, it is a personal choice, even though it could end us costing him money and fame. But that money and fame is not what it's all about despite what Paris Hilton might think. Apparently Joe Gibbs is doing some Soul searching over this.

Whoever wrote this is an idiot. You need to research where Gibbs gets his money! He's was rich way before returning to the Redskins. And you also want him to resign from the Redskins for something to do with racing? You might want to go to your local library and check out a book on logic. You are a clown!

I'm not sure what the point of this article is, other than a blatant (and rather lame) attempt at criticizing Joe Gibbs for his personal beliefs. If Joe Gibbs doesn't want to allow a beer company to sponsor one of his race cars, that is completely his right. I respect him for that. As far the difference between NASCAR and the NFL, beer commercials shown during NFL games is a totally different thing than placing a beer company logo across your race car. If the Washington Redskins had to wear uniforms with Budweiser across the back, Joe Gibbs would probably not be coaching them. Gibbs can't control what commercials are shown during games (and races), but he can control what sponsors are displayed on his race car.

Gibbs, who may be a little out-of-date for today's NFL coaching, doesn't seem combine his personal beliefs with his paycheck...just like so many Americans.

Well lemme see Dale Jr's ex step mother made the Dumbest move of 2007 , So Gibbs making the second dumbest move wouldn't supprise me in the least. If Teressa had an ounce of smarts left she should sell DEI to Jr since it will be worth Zero next year.

Let me get this straight, ads on cars means driving under the influence? Its a BEEPING AD not real life. People get over it. Maybe we shouldn't have movies with guns and murder since people will go out and do that, I mean if it is on Tv it must be cool to do. This politically correct culture that we live in is for the birds.

I think we are all missing the point. Just because Dale Jr is sponsored by Budweiser does not mean he or Budweiser advocate drinking and driving. Coach Gibbs has the right to his beliefs and I respect him for that but it is right you can't say I will coach and make money in a sport that makes money from alcohol companies and then be in another sport and say it's wrong to have a alcohol company sponsor you, it don't matter what the sport is football or racing. You can't have it both ways. Now lets look at Budweiser the company which is very responsible with their ads and has one of the most influential athletes advocating that drinking and driving don't mix and to drink responsibly. I am a Christian and have pretty much the same beliefs as Coach Gibbs does and I have an occasional drink now and then does that make me a bad person. Just because you associate yourself with an alcoholic beverage company does not make you a bad person and it does mean you condone drinking and driving. I really don't think it is such a bad thing to have Budweiser as a sponsor especially a company that does so much for our community and for different charities. Also we are all getting the cart before the horse. Budweiser may not go with Dale Jr so he may have to seek a new sponsor. Yeah I know right, I did not believe that when I wrote it, but stranger things have happened. Take it easy!

Let's remember the words of one of Junior's best commercials, "Just because it says BUD on the car doesn't mean there's Bud in the car." I go to both Phoenix races every year and I don't know what the other tracks do But BUD and BUD LIGHT are the only brands they sell, so Joe Gibbs is receiving beer proceeds if he likes it or not. Go for Junior Joe, that way we can prove he is just an average driver who has won a few restrictor plate races but doesn't really have the talent to be looked upon as the "star" of NASCAR.

God Bless You Joe and give em'.. heaven!!!! he doesn't want to endorse anything as such that can be and is everyday

Racing Phan, you are so cute. Adds do not make a person do whatever they do. It is incumbent on each person to demonstrate personal responsibility, and accountability. Has it become the American Way to shift blame for alcohol and drug abuse on T.V. Commercials, Logos on Vehicles, and Billboards? Like the commercials advocate, "Drink responsibly". And as far as the drunks, who don't know when to say "when" blame them, not NASCAR & NFL sponsors!
I'd rather you guys discuss the caution that should have been thrown Sunday. Nothing against JG, but when is NASCAR going to start being consistent with regard to cautions?????

LAST I CHECKED JOE GIBBS OWNS JOE GIBBS RACING AND HIS RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IN NASCAR IS FAR AND AWAY SUPERIOR TO ANYTHING JR. AND OR THERESA EARNHARDT HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. SO UNTIL JUNIOR STARTS WRITING GIBBS RACING CHECKS, I WILL RESPECT JOE GIBBS RIGHT TO CALL THE SHOTS FOR GIBBS RACING. GOOD LUCK JUNIOR.
