There has been much speculation that Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden is hopelessly enamored with Calvin Johnson -- so much so that he might trade up to ensure he gets Johnson. When you're dealing with picks that early in the draft, though, trading up can be very difficult. According to the NFL Draft Point Value Chart, this is the value for each of the first four picks in the draft:
#1 = 3000 points
#2 = 2600 points
#3 = 2200 points
#4 = 1800 points
The Bucs pick fourth, and while popular opinion still has the Raiders taking a quarterback first, the only way for Gruden and GM Bruce Allen to be absolutely sure they get Johnson is to trade up to #1. What would that require?
Well, in addition to the 4th pick, the Bucs also have three other first-day picks, #35 (550 points), #64 (270 points) and #68 (250 points). All those first day picks add up to only 2,870 points. Throwing in the Bucs' fourth-round and fifth-round picks would bring the point total up to 2,997 points.
Seriously, is Calvin Johnson really worth six draft picks to a team that finished 4-12 last season and has a lot of key players on the wrong side of 30? Didn't a similar strategy backfire spectacularly on Mike Ditka in New Orleans? And given their history, why in the world would Gruden give Al Davis that many draft picks?
On the other hand, if the Bucs wanted to deal with Detroit, which has needs at just about every position, they could deal #4 (1800 points), #35 (550 points) and #68 (250 points) to the Lions for the #2 pick, which would be dead even in terms of point value. That seems a little more reasonable for the Bucs, as it leaves them with at least one other first-day pick and still gives them the chance to fill their depth chart and special teams with young players.
Of course, this assumes that Al Davis doesn't put his grudge with Gruden ahead of his team needs and take Johnson with the #1 pick. Davis is a crazy old coot, but he's not that crazy. Is he?

That defensive tackle from N.C. State would fill
they're needs just as well if not better. They need to
stop someone.
They could use they're later picks looking for an
Antione Bolton/wr to pull out of they're hat.
That defensive tackle is going to move sides of offensive lines almost every play he wants. And it would be nice to know a large area they're opponents won't be going!
wouldn't it make more sense for the bucs to trade up just one pick to 3rd?? the lions aren't gona be pickin calvin johnson with the 3rd pick...i mean cmon, theres no way theyre gon draft a WR for a FOURTH yyear in a row plus it would still leave the browns to get brady quinn or adrian peterson

Then why bother moving up to the third pick. This
Heisman trophy candidate sounds abit overrated. Georgia Tech didn't place in the top 10. And who is going to throw to him anyway.
Take the best defensive tackle on the board and sign a free agent wr.
The Bucs already went through an attempt to sign
a star wide reciever a couple years back. What is his name? How bout those numbers?
Get the best defensive tackle on the board. That character will be in the opponents face for the next 10-15 years. N.C.State DT.
