Finally, sweet relief! The David Carr rumors are about to come to an end. Adam Schefter reports that, before the day is over, the Texans will send a second-rounder (and perhaps other compensation) to the Falcons for backup quarterback Matt Schaub. This has huge ramifications for the Texans, Falcons, and the draft.
For the Texans, it means that they have, perhaps, their quarterback of the future. Schaub has started only two games in his career, going 81-for-161 with six touchdowns and six interceptions, so there are no guarantees that he'll work out in Houston. But there's been a buzz about him and his potential as a starter for years, and he'll finally get his chance. They thought they had that guy in Carr, but for a myriad of reasons things didn't work out. Now they can find a new home for the beleaguered first-overall pick.
As far as the draft is concerned, the Texans should no longer be interested in Brady Quinn. This shakes up the top 10 picks, as the Notre Dame quarterback has been projected to land anywhere from the Lions (second overall) to the Texans at eighth. The Texans could potentially use Carr to move up in the draft (perhaps for Adrian Peterson, as has been rumored) if a team would rather have someone with Carr's experience than a rookie, or acquire more picks in general.
The trade also means that Bobby Petrino wasn't lying when he told Michael Vick and his nefarious water bottle that he was going to be the guy in Atlanta. Whether that decision will bite the Falcons in the end remains to be seen.
You could expect more coverage of this as details emerge.

Comments (Page 1 of 2)
Vick isn't worth a 2nd round pick, never mind Matt being worth that and more.
Looks like Mike Vick has a new group of enablers in Atlanta, in addition to his primary enabler, Arthur Blank.
Vick stated on HBO's "Inside the NFL" that he understood to be given the kind of control Peyton Manning has over the Indianapolis Colts' offense would require "more work and film study." Dan Marino was on that panel interviewing him, yet none of the panel had the stones to ask, "So, why aren't you doing that NOW?"
When Vick is on the sidelines, he's shooting the breeze with his buddies, pouting, or adjusting his do-rag. Heaven forbid he should be on the phone to the booth, talking to other coaches/players about what is going on, or looking at photos from the booth...in other words, looking for a edge, an angle...to WIN the game.
Vick is about Vick...nothing more, nothing less. We Falcons fans will rue the day Schaub was traded away.
The Falcons and Eagles brass must have been separated at birth.....
Both took the controversy out of the QB posiiton by trading away a legitimate contender for the starting job.
It will be interesting to see how 'Ron Mexico' and the Falcons and the 'Rehab' and the Eagles fare as a result. It will be even more interesting to see how Shaub and Garcia do on teams that were so dreadful in '06.
Any predictions?
The Falcoons once again give the reigns to this idiot..... why? He has done nothing to warrant it, who is the backup when he tweaks his hammy in game one??? Sad sad da for falcoons fans.
I am a Falcons season ticket holder and I am so dissapointed to see Matt go. At first I thought it was because I had seen him play at UVA For Four years and he would have great games against my favorite team Clemson but as you all know Vick (Ron) played at VT. But we all knew in Va Vick wasnt going to be anything in the NFL as a quarterback and I am so tired of the fans down here thinking he is the face of the NFL and they back it up by saying stupid stuff as he is the all time leading rushing at quaterback. Well hell the last time I checked any sports highlights and numbers for quaterbacks it was about how many yards they passed for and TDs that they passed for. GET RIDE OF VICK
First Wali Lundy, and now Matt Schaub...I'd say the Texans are now a mortal lock to win the Meineke Bowl.
Jaj, that comment was ridiculous. A 36-year-old Jeff Garcia who may or may not beat out JAKE PLUMMER for the starting job in Tampa Bay has no chance of competing with "Rehab McNabb", who just so happens to be a top-5 QB in the league.
Schaub for a second-rounder is a good deal for the Falcons. That situation has Rob Johnson-to-the-Bills written all over it...backup has like one good game, another team overpays, backup then proves his former team's judgment to be sound. Michael Vick is one of the best athletes to ever play professional sports (athletes, not quarterbacks); you don't give up on a guy like that.
I still can't believe that the Houston Texans solution to their offense is to trade David Carr. Everyday I see where the Texans are picking up DEFENSIVE players in free agency. How about revamping that entire offensive line, guys!
great day for us poor texan fans. this willbe a great addition to our franchise. kubiak will take this kidto the mountain top. thank you arthur blank.
STOP HATING ON VICK......IF HE WAS WHITE NOTHING WOULD BE MADE OF HIS FLAWS
It was not a ridiculous comment to make, because there's no denying that whenever there are calls for a backup to replace Vick or McNabb, the backup is gone, no questions asked. Look at Garcia, a guy who by all accounts was willing to come back as a backup, rather than accept a starting position on another team, and the Eagles didn't even begin to negotiate with him. A similar tactic was used when Feeley showed Eagles fans that it's possible to be a good/better team without McNabb. Say what you want about McNabb being some elite contender (nonsense-West Coast Offense quarterbacks tend to have padded stats), but the Eagles were on a steady decline prior to his injury this past season.
It's also worth noting how often these two quarterbacks are coddled by the media. On ESPN two nights ago, a feature with Michael Smith was run, discussing the top five quarterbacks on the hot seat this year. For some reason, McNabb made the list, only to be brushed off by Smith as "having nothing to prove" and that the "Philadelphia fans for some reason don't fully embrace McNabb", which is utter garbage. This guy has babied since he took the job from Doug Pederson, and any criticism that he's received has been just.
It's also worth noting that Vick made the hot seat list and received a certain amount of criticism, but no amount close to that of an Eli Manning or Rex Grossman. It should be pointed out that of the five quarterbacks discussed, only two had a legitimate highlight reel, as opposed to videos of the other three either taking big hits or throwing interceptions. Care to guess who the two quarterbacks shown in a favorable light were?
So before anyone dismisses charges of favoritism towards Vick and McNabb, I suggest you pay attention. The compliments fly at a pace that not even Marino or (Pre-Super Bowl) Manning have received, and a detective would have a hard time finding a commentator that criticizes either. The tide has turned a little bit on Vick recently, but the guy has been giving more excuses than he ever deserved.
As for Schaub, I don't get the hype. The guy has yet to perform all that well in the regular season, but if you want to give away high draft picks for a Hall of Fame caliber Pre-Season player, be my guest, Texans.
There is 1 name that explains why the Texans have sucked for so long, and it is not David Carr. Anyone who follows the Texans like I do knows the the name...........Tony Boselli.
geez, this brings back some memories of the last BACK UP QB THE FALCONS DUMPED.... WHAT WAS HIS NAME??? BRETT FARVE I THINK. MARK MY WORDS HISTORY WILL REPEAT. VICK WILL GO DOWN AS THE MOST OVER RATED QB IN THE GAME. MATT SCHAUB WILL BE FREE TO PROVE HE'S GOT WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.SOMETHING VICK HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DO. I USED TO THINK ARTHUR BLANK WAS A SMART GUY... BUT HE'S JUST ANOTHER ENABLER..FEEDING ILLUSIONS TO VICKS EGO..
JASON WHITLOCK,I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO READ YOUR TAKE ON THIS ONE...

what's wrong with atlanta ? if they trade shuab they are getting rid of the only quaterback they have. vick is no more than a runningback with an option to throw the ball. atleast shuab can complete more than 50 percent of his passes.
PIMP C: you're a dork!
If he was white, Ron Mexico would be just as funny.
...Ron Mexico...!! Yeah, baby!
What if Peyton Manning and/or Tom Brady were able to run a 4.23 fourty and throw a 60 yard bomb with the flick of a wrist -- BUT they talked disparagingly about watching game film and homework, and gave some chick herpes, and got checked into a clinic under the name Ron Mexico? See, it's still funny! But also, do you see how disappointed you'd be in them. Bad behavior transcends race. Everybody should do their best. Period.
Is it safe to say that playing the race card is just as out-of-style as the mullet? Especially in football?! Maybe I'm wrong... but I doubt it.
Shaddap, PIMP C.
Go Shaub! Go Houston! Go Vick! Go Falcons!
What.s wrong with Atlanta ? They are tradeing away the only quaterback they have. Atleast least Shuab can complete more than 50 percent of his passes, Vick is no more than a running back with an option to throw the ball.
Congrat's to David Carr on your impending release from
the Houston Texans!Maybe now you can sign with a real
live NFL team instead of that Division 2 collection
of offensive linemen & Mickey Mouse owner,& front
office personnel you've been subjected to for 5 yr's.
Sorry Mickey nothing personal.
Let me get this right. Matt Schaub was a 50.3% passer with the same number of touchdowns as interceptions... and he's better than Vick how? He's famous for almost beating the Patriots. Wow, HOF material for sure.
To be fair, Vick certainly hasn't lived up to his potential and he may never. But Matt Schaub hasn't proven he can get the job done. Remember Doug Johnson? He had a few good games when Vick was hurt in '02. But when Vick was hurt at the beginning of '03, how'd Dougie pan out? Scott Mitchell anyone?
