Jake Plummer Really Retires This Time

Now it's official. After saying he was going to retire last week, after the Broncos traded him to the Buccaneers, quarterback Jake Plummer held a press conference yesterday announce his plans to do something other than backup Jeff Garcia/Chris Simms next season. According to the AP, Plummer was in a hurry too; he had a handball tournament to attend:
"I wanted to come in and tell you guys on camera and face-to-face that the speculation can stop tonight. You can know by the looking in my face and hearing my words that I am retiring from the NFL. At 32 years old, I'm running away from the game. Not in fear or fright, but health-wise. I'm healthy. I'm happy. I have a lot to look forward to in my life."
The guy sounds fine with his decision, doesn't he? Plummer, channeling Jeff Spicoli, also said, "football has been awesome," and that the only way he's wearing an NFL jersey is if Denver's third-stringer Preston Parsons "gets in [the game] somehow."

And I wasn't kidding about the handball thing. Plummer and his brother were scheduled to play in a Colorado state handball doubles tournament after the press conference. I'm guessing Plummer is more Peter LaFleur than White Goodman in this movie. Well, as long as he doesn't bring back the 'stache.

Seriously, Plummer is one year removed from the AFC Championship game, and if head coach Mike Shanahan hadn't benched him in favor of rookie Jay Cutler last season, Denver probably would have made the playoffs. A lot can change in a year.
