The free agent news around the Giants went from silent to booming last night. In fact, there is so much going on I don't have time to write separate posts about it. So sit back, relax and enjoy the overflowing Giants free agent news.
Dre Bly: According to ESPN's Michael Smith, the Giants have expressed interest in acquiring Bly from the Broncos. Apparently they held preliminary talks with Detroit before he was moved to Denver and with him now demanding a re-trade, the Giants are back in the picture. Bly wants to play closer to his Virginia home but the Broncos may not bite on a trade unless it's something "they can not refuse."
Donnie Edwards: The Giants are interested in the services of former Charger Donnie Edwards. Edwards appears to be looking for a ton of cash while the Giants appear hesitant to dish it out. No meeting between the two sides has yet to be scheduled.
Roderick Hood: Hood's name will just not disappear from the Giants radar and that's a good thing. No deal seems imminent because the Giants are not offering him what he's looking for. Even though he's stated a few times that he'd like to play for the Giants, money talks and right now Arizona, New Orleans and Cleveland all have bigger offers on the table. However, Hood is likely to take less to play in New York.
Deon Grant: The Giants have a slight interest in Deon Grant but he's made it clear he wants to remain in Jacksonville. No meeting has been scheduled but anything is possible.
Kevin Curtis: The back-and-forth nonsense with Kevin Curtis will continue today. First he was scheduled to visit, then fired his agent, then skipped the Giants meeting and now apparently he's coming in - without an agent. At this point I won't even pretend to know what's going on.
Jay Feely: Even after the Giants upped their offer, Jay Feely decided to bounce New York. He signed a three-year, $6 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

What in the world is Reese doing? We have no left tackle, d-line, linebackers or cb's. All he seems to be focused on is amnother running back to compliment Jacobs. It is unbleivably frustrating to watch all the other teams (especially division opponents skins & cowbags) go out and spend while the Giants sit on their hands and do nothing. We let Feeley go so we can give the job to a guy that played one season since high school. Does this make sense to anyone? All Feely wanted was market value - but the Giants want to pay below market. That's why we have no new free agents. We are 9MM under the cap for gods sake. Come on Jerry! Not a happy Giant fan.

Can Any1 tell me what NY is doing? They have sat by and watched almost every FA get hand picked by other teams. Is Reese afraid to sign the long term deal? Does he know what the hell hes doing? They cut and lost there Pro Bowl Lt and now hes with the Bucs They just lost out on Willis he just got traded to Baltimore and the Blackberry is stating the Bills are close to a deal with Rhodes so that meaans the Giants blew that offer. Tell me who the hell is left to complement Jacobs. Unless Reese has big plans for the draft I see this team lost with out any direction. Hell even the Jets who like to build through the draft got a nice deal made, what are the Giants doing but stuck with the finger up their ass. Id say only possible hope in the draft is maybe Darius Walker from ND. He expressed he wanted to be Tikis replacement. maybe hell be a steal but the Giants are a hugh dissapointment in the FA. and so far Resse gets an F... Giants needs LT,DB,RB,Vet QB,LB and now a kicker unless they hope Josh can kick in Giants stadium for a rookie...Yea right LMFAO...

I don't know much about Reece, and don't deny that the Giants have lots of needs, but I'll defend him. Given the cost of relatively mediocre free agents this year, and the fact that even big-talent free agents only make sense if you're no more than two players away from being a Super Bowl contender, why throw money at the problem. The Giants need help at about 7-8 positions plus special teams. You can only fill those needs through the draft while "holding down the fort" with mid-level or lower free agents (who will be available now) and the guys who are late cuts over the summer. What you do have to do is make sure you have cap room to keep the good young players you already have. Watch, a lot of teams will see strong players leave next year and the year after because of a combination of deep resentment that players who can't hold their jocks got paid a fortune this off-season and the fact that their teams used too much cap room to sign those veteran free agents.
If the Giants have two good drafts, and pick up a few excellent role players to fill specific needs via cheaper free agents and training camp cuts (many of whom can be strong players given the chance), they should be in great shape just as Eli reaches his peak years (generally 5-6 years into the league for a QB). If he doesn't work out all the free agents in the world won't matter. If he does, then Reece is being pretty shrewd, IMHO.

I WISH I KNEW WHAT THE G-MEN WERE THINKING! FIRST WE KEEP A COACH THAT THE FANS(I WAS AT THE NO GAME X-MAS EVE)DON'T WANT ANYMORE AND THAT THE PLAYERS DON'T WANT TO PLAY FOR. THEN TIKI RUNS HIS MOUTH AFTER HE LEAVES, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO PLAY IN NY RIGHT NOW? THIS WILL BE YET ANOTHER YEAR OF HIGH HOPES AND GREAT,GREAT, LET DOWNS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PAY THE BILLS IN THE MEADOWLANDS- US THE FANS!

I just called the Rutherford NJ police , to file a
missing person report on Jerry Reese.... Though the
Giants have much cap space, he is starring in Nero..
The man who fiddles while Giant fans burn... Watching
the Jets steal Thomas Jones from the Bears makes me
sick... The Ravens get Mcgahee... Mr Mara is halfway to turning over in his grave....

So now that a lot of teams have filled their plates with high-priced running backs, doesn't it occur to some of you that there will now be some pretty decent RB's available in the draft even in the second and third rounds? We're looking for someone to share carries with Jacobs, not to be a # 1 back to his #2. That guy needs to be a good outlet option for Manning and a guy with a quick burst. There are plenty available coming out of college, and their draft value is dropping as all of these teams solve their backfield problems. The Giants can get a good one without having to use their first pick (which should be used for someone on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage).
Losing Petigout, the two LB's, and Feely? Big deal. All long past their prime. By the way, since when did Feely look like someone to keep? The other team started beyond the 30-yard-line way too often because of his lousy leg strength. That costs you games. And the Giants actually have some depth at the O-line, with Seubert and Ruegamer now able to become critical parts of the team.
The best move of the off-season so far? Keeping O'Hara and not being suckered into overpaying for Clements or any of the running backs.
You guys who are screaming for them to "do something" would be the first to scream for the GM's head when one of his pick-ups turned out to be among the 90% of these off-season moves by other teams that turn out to be busts.

fanfor55years you've got it right!! Mcgahee's not worth 3 picks especially when you've so many holes to fill, and free agency? Doesn't anyone remember Arington? Didn't anybody see how much money Shianco got from the Vikings? And for WHAT?!!. Even Crazy Eddie knows "the prices are INSANE!!". 55's got it right about the draft. RB can filled in 2nd round of the draft by someone like a Brian Leonard or a Chris Henry. My fear is that the Giant's may not get a quality CB like Revis and Houston or a FS like Landry & Nelson in the first round.... whoops!, I'm going off on a tangent aren't I?. What I'm saying is this:Judge Jerry Reese not by what he does during free agency, but rather judge him by what he does in the draft.

The Jints are missing in action and as long as the waiting list has a 10 year life, what's the rush to sign free agents. Now that being said, what I really believe is that Tiki Barber's comments have spooked some people from even considering the Giants. In addition, Coughlin is a lame duck coach at this point so what athlete is willing risk a career on an eventual unknown coaching change and team direction. So with Reese's hands being tied, so to speak, perhaps their strategy is to do nothing to make the team better and let them loose this coming year inevitably causing the coaches firing and then here comes Cowher or the next retread to reload the team with Reese. Right now, that seems to make sense. They should have dumped Coughlin the day after the season ended. These emails wouldn't be necessary then!

By the way, since they didn't "jump" at McMichael to replace Shancone at TE, perhaps they're watching for Clark Harris from Rutgers in the draft or considering Brian Leonard in a position change. Either or both wouldn't hurt!!!

HEY GUYS!!!!HANG ON...Lets not go krazy!!!Jerry Reese has only made one mistake and thats keeping Coughlin. I have been venting lately that nothing is going on with the Giants, but grabbing all the big name players does not win you superbowls. The Rod Hoods and role players are still available. Reese has a draft plan for linebacker and positional needs and will pick up a few players before the draft. Look for the Giants to be very busy on draft day. They might even trade a pick or two before. PATIENCE MY MEN...PATIENCE....Things will unfold

Thanks for the endorsement GymboC.
Now let's see where we are. We kept O'Hara, we created room on the O-line for Seubert and Ruegamer (both of whom, in my opinion, will be studs for years to come), we let guys go who were all over the hill (except Shiancoe, and there's a guy on the roster ready to take his position on the depth chart), we didn't spend a ridiculous amount of cap money to get second-tier players who got paid like Hall of Famers, and we've got plenty of cap room to use for role players who will get $2MM guarantees instead of $12-20MM and to re-do contracts with the core of young players on the D-line and O-line. Seems to me that Reese has done a really good job so far. The only possible "misses" were the Pats pickup at linebacker (although I think it was too expensive for a team with lots of holes to fill, the Patriots may have won another Super Bowl with their free agent picks...but Reese is the GM of the Giants, not the Pats) and the Jets stealing Jones from the Bears. As to the latter, if the Giants think Jacobs is ready to take 50-60% of the carries then Jones wasn't needed.
We go into the draft with a desperate need for linebackers and defensive backs, perhaps (if there hasn't been a late free agency pick-up) a need for a complementary runner to go with Jacobs (we can't replace Tiki, but a combo of Jacobs and a good complement might get 75% of his production), and a defensive tackle, plus lots of spots on the special teams and the depth chart. There will be good backs available in rounds 2 and 3; there will be pretty decent backs available as a result of training camp cuts; and there might even be some good undrafted free agents. Hopefully, Reese and his staff have their eyes on the best available guys on the defensive side of the line-of-scrimmage because that is where they need to spend most of their draft picks for the next two years unless an immense talent on offense drops into their laps. Unlikely. Let's face it. The Giants are simply not a Super Bowl contender in the 2007-2008 season. You don't lose Tiki Barber and not take a step back. But there's a really good young core and if Reese keeps it intact and builds on it then things could get interesting in the following two seasons.
