This comes from Peter King's the latest edition of Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback on SI.com. King was effusive in his praise of both JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn, but dropped in this note about how they don't really get along. I think the NFL rookie version of A-Rod and Jeter is JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. Being around Russell at the combine, I got the feeling he won't be inviting Quinn to any of his pre-draft soirees. Seems he thinks Quinn was a bit stuck-up when they worked out in Tempe over the last couple of months. And Quinn doesn't know exactly what happened, but he saw he was scheduled to work alongside Russell when the two first got to Arizona, and the next day he saw Russell had been switched out of the group. Coincidence? Maybe. But they're not destined to be best buds. That's great, but we need this to escalate. The NFL's had these kind of individual quarterback draft rivalries before ... Mirer/Bledsoe, Manning/Leaf. But they're usually not contentious ... even Ryan Leaf claimed that he and Peyton Manning were friends (though I bet Peyton would deny it at this point).
Imagine a QB race like that with the parties actively campaigning against each other. I would love that ... say Quinn starts a press conference one day to make fun of Russell for being out of shape, and then Russell's agent responds by starting a rumor that he saw Quinn making out with Clay Aiken ... and then it culminates with Quinn responds by telling the press that Pacman Jones made it rain on JaMarcus's mother.
Come on, fellas. Make it interesting. Escalate the hate.

Great example of responsible journalism. Starting rumours and escalating the hate. Way to go....not.

So what if they don't like eachother? All I have ever heard about Brady is that he's a friendly guy, and I'm sure that's all anyone else has ever heard too, so I doubt this really is that big of an issue.
And JaMarcus was probably switched out from Brady's group because he had to go work out with the lazy fatasses. Too bad it didn't help him. What kind of idiot shows up to the Combine that overweight?

Hey Janet- fyi, Russell showed up to the combine a whopping 5 pounds over his normal weight. He's not a beach-bod guy, but ask anyone in the SEC if they can bring him down on first contact. He may not be an adonis like the guy from Stanford but then again you have plenty of time to work out when you are sitting on the bench nursing injuries all the time. As for Quinn, I don't care how ripped up you get, football is a game played on the field- not in the weight room. Sure, you have to work out and Russell does, but he is not concerned about being cute- he just wants to play football. He'll do so for a long time and there will be fatass fans that will complain just like they did when he was in college. All he does is win.

AR- I am well aware that JaMarcus was only 5 pounds over his playing weight. To me, that only means his playing weight is too large as well. The gut on that guy at the Combine was ridiculous. For someone who also spent time at the Athletes Performance Institute this past month, it begs the question, What was he doing there? Shouldn't he have lost weight (or at least turned that stomach into muscle) if he had been truly working hard?
I also agree that games are not won in the weight room. But I think it says a lot about someone's work ethic when they work hard in the weight room and show up to the Combine in perfect shape even though they aren't going to be working out. To me, that says Brady's a hard worker. I won't go so far as to say JaMarcus isn't, but I found it a little disrespectful and dumb for him to show up looking like that.

To Be all honest with all this talk lets get right to the point. Jamarcus Russel is the better football player out of the two. Brady in college hasnt won any bowl game he has played in. I did not know why Notre Dame was ranked so high at the beginning of the season and he was the number one Heisman candidate. I could name 5 guys excluding the Heisman trophy winner Troy Smith and Jamarcus Russel who are better quarterbacks than Brady Quinn. How about Jared Zabransky of Boise State, or Colt Brennan of Hawaii, John David Booty(and oh yeah the Trojans will be National Champions next year). Chris Leak damn sure proved that he should be drafted at the top of round 1. Chris Leak still gets overlooked though even though he was the reason his team won the national championship because of him. Brady Quinn hasnt won not one big game that Notre Dame had to play. To me the biggest game he NEARLY won was against Notre Dame the season before the last. And one more thing if I have to pick between Jamarcus Russel and Brady Quinn I would most definitely pick Jamarcus over Brady because Jamarcus already Brady. Remember Sugar Bowl January 3, 2007. And just Jamarcus came in a few pounds overweight as long as he preforms up to his ability he will do better the Mr. Quinn.

i would put the irish schecdule aginst anyone out there, they did loose 3 games #1 Mich, LSU, USC wow, does that make them a bad team, no. it takes a team to win at that level, the offense did not loose those games, how many points did they score? Some of you guys are ND haters, they will be back, and Weis will have recruited the past couple of years, so don't count them out of the mix, they will be there..

Steven, you are rediculous. You all say Brady is ripped but that doesnt matter? Well considering he had no O line in college and got hit pretty hard sometimes it does help. he never missed a game at ND. He took huge hits but got right back up. You say he never won a big game? Thats garbage. besides you cant blame Brady. He isnt the one that gives like 400 yards of total offense to his opponents, he had no D either. Nice job comparing Jamarcus to Brady in their bowl game too when Brady went against a good D n Jamarcuz went against crap. Brady Quinn is no doubt the most poised and pro ready QB in the draft. You say Leak should go in the first round, and Jared Zabranski? Your nuts dude.

ND's schedule? What a joke? Mich, USC and their bowl game losses are the only schools ND played that were any good at all. I'm sorry, but any school that plays all 3 of the military academies - besides the academies - does not have a tough schedule. When was the last time ND won a bowl game? Quinn's just a product of the media's man love. But, I guess all questions will be answered in a few years.

I think after watching ND games all year, Quinn is a far better QB then Russell. the one against Mich State where Brady himself brought the team back and won. he is strong and fast as well, he will be by far the better QB in the NFL then Russell ever will be. and who ever takes him over Quinn will make a huge mistake. I am just sorry the 49ers are not lookign for a QB. he may be even better then our's Alex Smith, he's not all that bad but he can be better and Quinn I fell will be a better pro the Smith or Russell or the other QB's most recently taken the past few years. good luck to Quinn.

If it weren't for the radio in the NFL QB helmets, J.Russell is at LSU again next year. Then, he will hope to catch on an NFL team as a Tight End. Maybe that's why he is a little heavy. He is probably getting good advice. He could not get under center in the day of Joe Montana or Doug Williams.

LET'S FACE IT THIS IS FOOTBALL, WHO CARES WHAT RIVALRY THESE TWO HAVE, AS LONG AS THEY CAN LEAD A TEAM TO A VICTORY THEY CAN HATE ALL THEY WANT. I DON'T KNOW IF ONE TALKED ABOUT THE OTHER FIRST AND HONESTLY I DO NOT CARE, LET THEM HATE, BRADY IS A SMALLER MORE FIT QUARTERBACK WHO CAN MOVE AROUND WELL WHILE JAMARCUS IS A BIG GUY THAT DOESN'T HIT THE GROUND, THEY ARE BOTH OUTSATANDING ATHLETES!

Football is the ultimate team sport. One man cannot win games. It is difficult to pass when you are on your back, gain yards without blocking, get the ball back without a defense. Far too much credit is being given to the QB for winning the games.
However regarding the current discussion, the Sugar was hyped as a face off between qb's. The trouble, was Russell went against the fifty-third best pass defense in the nation, while Quinn went again the third best pass defense and still threw for two TDS.
For that matter, Smith was surrounded by a superior group of athletes, so he was awarded the Heisman.

Steven, Chris Leak will never make the NFL. Tim Tebow, his backs and receivers is why the Gators won. Every time Leak took a good pop, he was rattled the rest of the game. Wait until an NFL tackle or a 260lb linebacker on a blitz knocks him out of his shoes! He doesn't have the mental toughness to take the NFL hits. That's what every scout saw and that's why Leak won't be in the first or second round.

Hey Scott, Michigan State gave that game away with poor play on defense and some of the poorest play selection in the second half. How does Quinn throw the game winning touchdown, WHICH WAS AN INTERCEPTION THROWN BY STANTON. The validity of that victory was wiped out the next week when Illinois beat MSU. Quinn is a good quarter back, but I don't think he is going to be a franchise quarterback that Weis says he will be in three years. I think he'll have a good career, but in the same ranks as Manning, and "I don't shoot blanks" Tom Brady I don't think so.
He threw against some of the poorest play pass defenses I've ever seen. Who knows we may find Samardzjia made Quinn.
