According to ESPN the Jets have acquired Thomas Jones and a 2007 second round draft pick from the Chicago Bears in exchange for one of their 2007 second round (37th overall) draft picks. Jones had asked for a trade a little over a week ago and now he's been given his wish. He'll head to New York (pending a new contract) and assume the starting role for Gang Green with Leon Washington serving as his "change-of-pace" back.Jones seemed to get frustrated in Chicago this year as he began to lose more and more carried to Cedric Benson, eventually prompting the trade request. He'll get no shortage of carried in New York; the 1,210 yard back should see 25-30 carries a game hands down.
It's amazing that the Bears would swap picks and give up a starting running back for very little in return. The Jets really ran away with this trade. What a move by New York.

New York gets a guy that would have been 1500-1600 yard guy had he been given more carries and not shared the backfield with C. Benson.
Unbelievable that the Jets were able to get such a quality guy without giving up little to nothing in return. Definetly a no-brainer situation for New York and a poor move by Chicago.

I don't know where you live Dan or what NFL team you follow, but Thomas Jones is terribly overrated. I am a life long Chicagoan and life long Bears fan and after watching that punk Jones for acouple of years now I realize my grandmother could touch him and he would go down. He also has to be the slowest back in the NFL. New York got the best of it? Good bye whiner, gang-banger Jones' bring on Cedrick!

If this trade is indeed true, what a terrible deal for the Bears. Bears better have enjoyed their Super Flop, cause they wont be sniffing the Super Bowl anytime soon.

They needed to do this. T. Jones is slow, and stutter steps too much. I liked him, but his running was mostly from his good offensive line. Lets be real, the bears were not going to sign him to a long term deal after drafting benson with the number 4 pick. As a Bear fan, I wish jones luck, he was a good bear. His style backs are a dime a dozen, and I'm glad the bears got something for him. They will not miss a beat.

I do not necessarily agree that the Bears came out on the losing end of this deal. This year Cedric Benson proved himself as the team's stronger back, and no one knows whom the Bears will pick in the draft. That the Bear's management would so readily trade Jones seems to indicate they have an idea of their direction of the draft. The Bears already possess a strong team and will likely get stronger this upcoming season.

according to the trade value chart (http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/6330687) on the NFL's website, the difference between the number 37 pick and 63 pick is 254 points which comes out to be an early 3rd round pick. i would hardly say the jets made out like bandits. an early 3rd round pick for a 28 year old running back with only two 1,000 yard seasons in eight years could be high. this works for both teams; chicago doesn't need him but could use depth, and the jets desperately need a running back.

Thomas Jones and Lance Briggs. Two stars who don't want to play for a team that made it to the Super Bowl last year. What does this say about the organization. Seems to me things haven't changed much since '85. Michael McCaskey dismantled one of the best teams of all time back then. Lovie Smith has great difficulty getting a contract after such great success. The McCaskeys clearly don't like success.

i don't see jones as overated. can catch the ball and runs hard. i don't think neither team lost much with the trade. the bears still got cedric benson and want to use him obviously why they drafted him. jets get a proven back that can help with that horrible running game

Well the Bears already had the cash invested in Benson. So it makes sense to get something for T. Jones, and getting the 37th pick is a nice move. I would have liked to believe they could have gotten more for him........ However, I dont believe there was a big market for him. I wish him the best in New York because he handled the situation in Chicago like a CHAMPION and was far from a gang banger. Definetly the best running back since PAYTON when you look at the numbers.

The trade makes sense cause Jones will be be thirty in two years. And thats the age running backs break down. He is under contract for one more year and he was not getting an new one with Benson here. They didn't get enough back in my eyes but hopefully the money saved on Jones can get Lance Briggs signed long term.

Nice value trade for the JETS. This is not a rich draft for running backs so swapping 2nd round picks is a great move for a solid starting back that definitely has a couple of years left in him. He isn't the bruiser type back and that's why he'll be on the field more than C.Benson. And it says something that his team mates really resented Benson and wanted to play with Jones in the backfield.

We will see how Benson performs next year when he will have to run early in the games against fresh defenses. The only times he ran early this past year was vs. New Orleans & Indianaplolis, resuting in 2.5 yards per carry, one fumble, and one injury. (During these two games, Jones ran for over 220 yards with 5.5 yard per carry average.)

The Jets really got a steal with this pick. I don't care how many pints they give the picks. Losing 20 spots in the draft or getting an all star running back like Thomas Jones are not even close. Jones would HAVE EASILY RUSHED FOR 1600-1700 YARDS IF HE HAD NOT SHARED TIME WITH bENSON. Great trade and GO JETS!

Bill, you must have an awsome grandmother. I am simply stating facts and statistics. Actually, the Benson / Jones stats for the combined New Orleans & Indianapolis games were Benson: 2.3 yrds per carry, Jones 6.9 yrds. per carry.
After gaining 6.9 yards per carry, Jones can go down anyway he pleases, as far as I am concerned.

Big mike is either a Dolphins or Giants fan. The Jets are an improving team and picking up Jones along with just swapping 2nd rounders was a great move for them. He'll be the workhorse and hopefully can produce 1300 yds or so. Mix in Leon Washington and that makes for a nice backfield. He won't break a 70 yarder but he's solid and steady at 4.1 yds per carry. Benson won't make a whole 16 games and even as the feature back won't get more than 1000 yards next year. Benson did get 600 rushing yards this season so the guys saying that Jones would've had 1500 to 1600 yds had he not had to share carries, aren't far off.
