The Redskins made the right call, letting Derrick Dockery walk away. Dockery signed with the Bills for 7 years and $49M....making the Bills-Redskins free agent freeway a two lane affair [the Skins locked in former Bill London Fletcher earlier today]. That was way out of Washington's price range and it was nice to see that the Skins didn't fall into that trap.
So with the middle lineback slot filled with Fletcher, and the Skins and cornerback Fred Smoot ready to make a deal, the big hole to fill in free agency is at the offensive line, mainly a guard to replace Dockery. The Redskins line was one of the better units on the team in 2006, but losing Dockery hurts. With a young QB like Jason Campbell and a ton of talent at running back to block for, Washington would be smart to invest in the line.
And, accordingly, Leonard Davis is next up to visit Redskin Park. The six-year veteran played his first three seasons as a guard for the Arizona Cardinals, before moving to his nature tackle position the past three seasons. The former #2 overall pick has the same physical traits as Dockery but hasn't reached his desired potental yet.
From the Washington Post:
Davis, 28, spent yesterday visiting Dallas but left without reaching an agreement with the Cowboys, New York Giants and other teams interested in signing him, sources said, giving the Redskins an opportunity to strike a deal today.
