Why do the Bears hate their coaches? ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that contract talks between Lovie Smith and the Chicago Bears are going nowhere. Said Frank Bauer, Smith's agent: "We're not close, we're not encouraged, and based on where talks have gone recently, Lovie will be a free agent after next season. What the hell, Bears? What does a coach have to do get paid in that organization? Lovie Smith could win the Super Bowl, trim the Bears salary cap number down to seventeen dollars and forty-five cents, personally impregnate the biggest and strongest women in the world to breed a new generation of genetically-superior Chicago Bears, melt down every bronze bust that's in the Hall of Fame that is not of a Chicago Bear, and then sculpt the molten bronze into a giant statue of Mike Ditka putting out the Chicago fire with his super-human stream of majestic urine, and place that statue in front of the new Soldier Field, which he built by himself, with his own bare hands, brick by brick ... and Lovie Smith still wouldn't get paid.
"It would take an unforseen breakthrough for this to get done. And we are being more than reasonable in this market."
I'm really curious ... to whom to the Bears attribute last year's Super Bowl season? It wasn't Ron Rivera, because they let him walk. It wasn't Lovie Smith, because they won't pay him. It certainly can't be Rex Grossman, because he's Rex Grossman. Did Urlacher get there by himself?
Either the Bears attribute their recent success to someone or something that we don't know about, or they're just extremely cheap. Cheap seems more likely.

The only thing that the bears do not understand is that you get what you pay for. They should let Lovie go so a owner of another NFL team can treat him with the respect he has earned. The new owner can also go to the super bowl and ask the BEARS owners if they would like end zone seats.

Just shows you that Management is not serious about winning. They have a guy who has put something good together and no reward. He will leave and the Bears will get a 6-10 season for their efforts. Good job managment, thanks! Advid Vikings fan!

I am really getting tired of the Bears organization not willing to pay what their people are deserved. If Lovie leaves, so do I as an avid Bears fan. I will no longer support the McCaskey's and buy Virginia another big fur coat!

I hope the bears don't pay Lovie. *WINK* I'm a die Heart Giants Fan.
My best guess is that the Giants are going to need a new head coach next year.
I'd love to see Lovie Smith become the next Gaints head coach.

Lovie makes less than most coordinators. It's not about being black. The Bears didn't pay Ditka market rates for a Super Bowl coach either. They're notorious for being cheap.

Bears wouldnt have gotten where they are the last 2 years without Lovie. I mean who else could take a 2nd string quaterback like grossman and get the the super bowl. The bears loss will definately be someone's gain. It would be a travesty to see the bear lose smith, but then if they do its there own fault.

I love how easy that racist remark comes out. Just because your a "brother" doesn't give you a genetic predisposition to be racist towards the "white" man.
Whether they give Lovie Smith a new contract or not, has nothing to do with race. Nice scapegoat though - maybe he wants 9 million a year and the Bears are offering 6... Have the bears told Lovie Smith - "gee Mr. Black man if only you were white we'd give you the big bucks. I know we hired you and your race didn't surprise us at the time, but gosh we just noticed you were black."
Get the facts before you show your ignorance.

The hell with the race card issue. This is purely another insult by the Bear's management. How in the world do they believe they got to the Superbowl anyway???!!! You pay for what you get and these idiots plainly don't understand that axiom. It's not there is a great overload of good coaches wandering the streets these days. GOOD GRIEF!!!

Like I said..Lovie should be paid like a top 5 coach, been a bears fan for almost 20 years, if they don't pay him thats it,I'll root for my hometown Cardinals, who basically do the same thing the bears do by bending their fans over and take advantage of their backsides. I've watched ownership be cheap over the years but this is re-god-damn-dicilous..Why franchise Briggs, let him go to the Chiefs ..why not let the whole team go somewhere else, Trade Urlacher to the Browns for Charlie Frye, Trade Thomas Jones to the Giants..

Because he's black? It's ignorant "black" men like you that use race as an excuse for not getting anywhere in life!! If Lovie Smith had that same attitude, he wouldn't be in the position he is, AS A MAN! Lovie has dealt with the same prejudices that you have, but he is a better MAN, and has endured!
IDIOT!

I sure hope this is just media prey! Lovie is a class act and I am proud as a Bear fan to have him represent us. To me that is worth a whole lot. DIGNITY! The Bears management I hope will consider this and the fact it was 20 years before Lovie brought us back to the Super Bowl. Pay the man what he deserves. Otherwise you will lose a lot more than you think.
