ESPN's Outside the Lines aired a segment this morning about Ryan Leaf, the former Chargers quarterback and draft bust who at one point was considered by many a better prospect than Peyton Manning. Leaf said he considers Manning a friend, that he and Manning spoke on New Year's Eve, and that although he rarely watches NFL games, he's rooting for Manning to earn a Super Bowl ring tonight.Leaf came across on ESPN like a mature, confident person who has come to accept the fact that he never achieved NFL success. Leaf is now the quarterbacks coach and golf coach at West Texas A&M, earning, ESPN said, "close to $30,000 a year." But he still has millions saved up and doesn't need to work for the money. Leaf said his dream job is to coach one of the two college football teams in his home state, University of Montana or Montana State. When asked whether he would ever want to coach in the NFL, he said, "No. I don't like that level."

For being a jerk and loser for such a long time, he actually seems to have developed into something of a nice guy.

He was a boy when he came into the NFL - and some people handle the pressure better than others. You can't beat the guy up forever, ESPECIALLY when he's shown significant maturation over the years. Life is long, and it's not where you start, it's where you finish.

I saw Ryan give an interview about a year ago and he seemed like a really nice guy who just couldn't hack the pressures of the NFL. Although he did some stupid things, it was due to the hostilities he received on a daily basis. Not that I'm giving him an excuse but, when I get attacked, I fight back. It's only human. So don't judge him for fighting back. He's grown up now and helping future NFL players avoid what he went through. Good luck Ryan and thanks for rooting for Peyton! The Saints may not have made it to the Superbowl, but the son of a Saint did! Go Colts and Geaux Saints!

I'm glad to see that Ryan Leaf has gone on to establish
a good life for himself away from the NFL.Everyone
matures at their own pace and in their own time,
it took me 35 yr's. to start growing up & sometimes
people never do grow up.Leaf was just a kid when he
was thrust into the national spotlight,I wonder how
I would handle that kind of media attention at 49,
probably not as well as I would like.Anyway glad to
see him happy and well adjusted, good for him.

Ryan Leaf made an ass of himself and took the money and ran. I feel sorry for the team that paid him millions to be a mouthy sideline turd. He made T O look like a saint.

Sometimes, gaining maturity comes at a cost. Much
like the HBO article on Ryan, this too shows his
level of maturity. My hats off to him and any
student athlete who is fortunate to have him as a
coach.

brayon leaf was too young and imatue and not ready for the NFL,, Riveres was,and others too,,it seems the NFL lets the too young guys and they are not ready and the ones ready they do not start,, San
Deigo and others have made that mistake, and that is what happen to Leaf,, and few others too,, no kid should be able to play until they fully maturer, but the drafters of the young at too soon, hurt the young player to be,, students and young people should not be drafted until they are grown and ready,, it is the money game,, especially the NBA,, and more racist than the NFL and the KKK too,,, and the media is too scared to say anything about race or Muslims,,, and that is the problems,, with life,,,

Let's keep the focus on the man and the story. Why do people like Mr. Johnson always try and inject race into a topic where it has no bearing. Age does not always equate to maturity, some people handle things better than others. Those who do not should not be given the excuse of being to young or immature. You have young men carrying automatic weapons and risking their lives for us each day which is a great deal more pressure than having to shoot a ball through a hoop and whining about the pressure afterwards. Race is not the issue, people are. Leave the muslims and race out of it, correct your spelling and don't make excuses where there are none. Ryan Leaf grew up too late for success in the NFL but success in life is much more important to all of us.

Ryan Leaf was a jerk even before he was picked for the NFL. He was a jerk in high school who went on to be a bigger jerk in the NFL. Glad he didn't make it in the NFL. We don't need any more jerks there. We have enough. Need more nice guys like Payton Manning and Hines Ward.

Being a San Diego resident I got to see Ryan Leaf in all his glory during his Charger years. He was an immature jerk the entire time he was here. He set the team back 3 years in their development of a playoff contender, and honestly I didn't think he was that bright. He didn't seem to grasp the complexities of the NFL.
All that being said, it sounds like he grew up quite a bit. Having your butt handed to you like his was in the NFL will do that to you. I wish him success in his new endeavor, but I don't think he'd be welcome here no matter how much he has grown.

Never say never again deptartment. The best football coaches by majority vote were not the greatest players on the planet but learning from their coaching mentors they usually become great NFL coaches. Tony Dungy, Tom Flores, John Madden and others fit the mold. If Ryan Leaf were to become an NFL head coach he would be a great coach since he has learned from his childish behaviour as a player.

Cryin Leaf set the Chargers back 5 years. I remember him getting boo'd at a game during a United Way ad he was in. That is how much us fans hated him. Payton should distance himself from this loser.

I think Ryan Leaf could be a blessing in disguise for whatever school gives him the oppertunity to be a head coach, I think that because he failed so badly in the NFL that it will push him to great success as a coach. And being that i will sonn be attending one of the schools he says he wants to one day coach i would be proud to have him coach at my school and being that i one day wish to be a college football coach i would consider it an honor to coach with him as well. Let the past be the past as a Charger fan and as someone who went to the biggest rival of his high school we beat them this year by the way. i should hate ryan leaf but i don't if he had been really good we might never have gotten Merriman or LT so i can't be to mad i just wish him the best of luck in whatever he does in life.
