A lof of times, people who write and talk about sports -- and I'm including myself in this -- don't take into account how much it would suck for a guy like Rex Grossman to wake up every day and see 20 articles and hours of television coverage about how badly he sucks at his job. I'm not saying that Rex Grossman doesn't suck at his job, I'm just saying that that's probably not a whole lot of fun for Rex Grossman.
And I'm not making any judgments about that being fair or unfair, deserved or undeserved. It's just something he has to deal with. And today, he got a little bit sick of it and fired back ... at least, as much as one can "fire" anything without raising their voice, getting angry, or using naughty words. Here's Rex, in this video from the excellent NBX Sports Blog:
Even if you're convinced that Rex Grossman is a terrible, terrible quarterback, and you are not willing to consider otherwise ... that little outburst right there ... Rex Grossman has earned that. He's taken enough abuse that if he felt like showing up to media day and answering questions only through a black, foul-mouthed hand-puppet named Franklin ... well, he'd have been entitled.
And he's right about a lot of this ... the average sportswriter out there really doesn't understand the complexities of an NFL offense. It's not that they're dumb, or incapable, it's just ... some plays are a little more complicated than just "Drop back and throw it to an open guy." If it makes you feel any better, Rex Grossman probably couldn't do your TPS reports, either.
At any rate, I appreciated Rex's commentary today on the ignorance of sportswriters, and frankly, I don't know how this doesn't happen more often.

Wouldn't it be great to see Rex have about 250 yrds passing with 3 TDs vs Mannings 3 INTs in a Bears CONVINCING win in this years Super Bowl? What would the press do then?? And not to mention the Bears have scored more points this season than the Colts. So much for jaugernaut offense by the Colts. The "over" is a LOCK!!

Rex if I were you use the negative writing from the Peyton Manning Fan Club to motivate you to work harder and smarter to be as good and better than Peyton Manning and win the Super Bowl and then you will get some endorsements.

It's easy to sit back and judge Rex but, bottom line,
HE's in the Superbowl his first full season with LESS
INT. then Manning had his first season. And no, Rex did not get to the Superbowl alone, but neither did the defense, if it was ALL about defense, they would have been there before this, give the kid some credit, he was still in High School when Peyton was playing in the NFL. He was runner up for the heisman
in his sophomore year at UF, I agree with Rex, people need to check his stats before bashing him, if they did they would also know, he's TIED with Manning this year for games with a QB rating over 100 and he BEAT Manning's stats in the playoffs, funny how all the so called Sports reporters leave those things out. I think he's handled the BS better then most people would. He's also the first Rookie starter to finish the season 13/3 and the only one to get to the Superbowl as a starter, check those facts! His Rookie contract ends at the end of 2007, maybe Tampa Bay or Jax. should try to get him, they could use him! It's been the year of the Gator, Chicago has 4 ex Gator's,
hopefully that "luck" ( that some like to think) will hold on for the Superbowl. Go Rex!!

Grossman is just a kid but still a professional.I waited over twenty years to see a great season like this season. The true Bear fans believe in him. I believe in him. Manning spent many years getting closer and closer to the big win. Grossman also will have to pay his dues. We need to believe. He needs to believe as we do. He'll be back next season wiser and more jaded when it comes to the press. The kid can do it!! BELIEVE!!!!
