With that in mind Redskins Fanhouse will kick off the festivities by running down the team's unsigned free agents and potential cap-casualties (this could take a while). I'll try to offer up opinions on what I believe would be best for the organization and what I believe they'll really do.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is where the Redskins' off-season truly begins. Dockery is part of a dying breed, his talents have been developed in-house much like Ladell Betts. The way the franchise handles his contract negotiation will tell us how serious they are about reevaluating their philosophy regarding personnel.
2007 Salary Cap Number: Whatever the market will bear...
Importance to Team: With all due respect to Elvis Costello, nobody commits the false start quite like our own Double D. Regardless, young and physically dominating guards don't become available all that often. The team was fortunate to land Randy Thomas a couple of years back and they shouldn't be counting on another starter materializing in front of their faces. When the Redskins lack talent and continuity on the offensive line the team invariably struggles to find its way.
Relative Opportunity Cost*: It's hard to imagine Dockery commanding a pay day so valuable that the team would allow him to walk away. As long as the price tag isn't ridiculously exorbitant they have to bring him back. There's no other option out there and if they let him go they'll be taking a step back going into next season. s
Verdict: I believe I've already let my thoughts be known, if you're still unsure let me clarify...I DON'T CARE IF YOU HAVE TO FORCE THE PEN INTO HIS HAND, YOU WILL RESIGN DERRICK DOCKERY!
*No I didn't really devise a formula to calculate this, I'm a blogger not a mathlete.

I concur. DD like all the other Redskins were cast into an off season blitz which included the bouncing of two well respected players, Gibbs decision to get out of the offensive coaching business and a brand new coach with a brand new scheme. This is not the time to panic or overhaul the lineup. The current team is now more familar with the process and have had one year to get to know each other. Let it be.

I agree, how we handle DD will show direction, in recent years, we have always coveted other teams players more than our own, hence Smoot in Minn, Pierce in NY, and we signed Trotter. If Dockery is playing for someone else next year, we are continuing down the same path of destruction we have been on since Synder bought the team.

Keep the offensive line intact if possible despit his false starts tendencies.

Yes we must sign him. Offensive line has been the best part of the team for past season and a half,-going back to their 6 game win steak at the end of last year. I thought both guards were too slow to get out on sweeps and lead block but thats wrong, they are fast enough. Also, a young quarterback can use a superior offensive line and running game to make him better.
And, we should keep Clinton Portis even though we gave up too much to get him. He's really good.
The other weak spot of the offense is the third receiver who should be a tall goodhands guy who can get first downs over the middle,-and thats not Brandon Lloyd.
The story is the defense next year but it will be hard to get the people to improve four positions which they need since the skins mismanage the draft AND fee agency.
But meanwhile we gotta resign Dockery to not get further behind the eight ball.

This off season will be no different. Look for Snyder's brain trust to run the really good and loyal players out of town and bring in another bunch of over paid nearly over the hill "me first" free agent head cases who will help to guarantee us another hopeless season in 2007.

Yes, the Redskins need to keep DD, they will need him in the coming season. He needs to work hard on his penalties and stay with the Redskins.

-D.D. is slow and not an athletic type of player. He tends to be clumsy! Most of the league always knew that and would not draft him. He was always slow and will always be slow and he can never be a pulling guard like Russ Grimm. And he is not very bright! So, what to do? If possible, keep him as a backup and use the highest available draft choice on a guard and hope for the best.
