Marty Schottenheimer's team didn't look well-coached tonight. Personal foul penalties, wasted timeouts and a bizarre decision to go for it on fourth-and-11 from the 30-yard line all make it easy to question Schottenheimer's coaching. At the post-game press conference, Jason Whitlock asked Schottenheimer if he expected to be back next season, and although he initially evaded the question, he did later come out and say he expects to coach the Chargers in 2007.
I still think he's gone. A report late last week said he would be fired if the Chargers lost to the Patriots, and even if that report was off-base in some way, the way tonight's game played out makes it hard to see how Schottenheimer is safe.
None of this means Schottenheimer is a bad coach. He's a good coach. But the Chargers are at a point in their franchise history -- LaDainian Tomlinson and Shawne Merriman in their primes, Philip Rivers emerging -- when they need more than just "good" from their coach. They need great. Schottenheimer hasn't been great. I think he'll lose his job this week.

Yea , I agree. He doesn't seem to put enough emphasis on team discipline and team play. He relies too much on great athletes and talent alone. I'm not saying you have to be Belichick-like in your approach or philosophy, but you gotta have more discipline than what was shone tonight. Looks like trading off Drew Brees was a bad move also.
And the Chargers were not gonna blow out the Patriots tonight. They're too good a team. And, at the same time, you just felt like the Patriots were gonna win in a close game. So , I guess there the Chargers just didn't have a good chance anyways.
I think it would be stupid to fire Marty for several reasons.
1. The Chargers are back in the playoffs
2. The Browns have not won anything since he left
3. the Chiefs have not won anything since he left
4. Waashington was turning into a winner before he left and still has not won
Marty is a winner. Plain and simple
He coaches the team to it's regular season in franchise history, and you think he should get fired?
FIRE HIS ASS. HIS GAME MANAGEMENT WAS TERRIABLE. GO COLTS!!!
it would be ok with me if they fire marty, I'm a Bronco fan :)
Marty challenged an obvious fumble after that interception. Could have used it to stop the clock on that play that got them into field goal range to try another play. And why was the guy trying to intercept a fourth down play anyway? The game would have been over and all those type of mistakes should be blamed on the coach. I am a Viking fan. So I know about good coaching in the regular season then bone head coaching in the playoffs and 4 SUPERBOWLS. Marty should be fired minutes after that major screw up!!!!!
you had a 3 time super bowl champ vs. a 1st year starter...what did you expect. if the chargers are that dumb enough to fire him, then i hope my dolphins are smart enough to hire him. i know shula loves him, thats why they interviewed his kid. But i will take Marty anyday.
Marty may be a great regular season coach, but he's always outcoached in playoffs ... if Chargers are going to take next step, he's gotta go.
The Chargers would have done better if they played Marty ball. LT was running free. I am a Pats fan and I smiled every time they tried to pass the ball. Then I thanked them for trying to be anti Marty.
P.S His team is stupid. He can't help that. Interception on 4th down, a head butt, Gates running out of bounds with 30 free yards ahead of him... Not Marty's fault.
I don't see how or why you'd fire a coach after a 14-2 record. The Chargers have more talent than the Pats, but there's great value in having been there before. Brady and Co. know how to win the big playoff games; the Chargers don't...
Why should Marty be fired? I read these comments about his past performance in Cleveland, Washington, and Kansas City but lets looks at two things.
1 - He ultimately left for one reason or another (to quote the Donald "You're FIRED"
2 - He didn't win come crunch time in those places either.
Winning in the regular season only gets you so far. It's being there in the end that gets you the long term package. That means watch out Dungy!
This game was lost on an interception that never should have been. On fourth down you bat the ball away you dont intercept it. Even without the fumble which did lose the game for the Chargers. an interception would have cost the team ten yards. Selfish foolish play bat it down dont catch it.
I can't see how you blame Coach Schottenheimer for the loss. Receivers not catching passes,DB's dropping interceptions, stupid personnel fouls. not any of these involved the head coach. If anything it's time to get some good receivers, look for someone to take Jammer's position.
9 Pro Bowlers no way the coach is fired. I hope that A.J. Smith and Dean Spanos look at this right. 14-2, 6 points puts the Bolts at 16-0.The Chargers will be back and with a huge chip on their shoulders.
I'm 57 years old, living in Northern California, and have been rooting for the Chargers for 40 years. Today's defeat is the most devastating I have ever experienced. This team had everything going for it, but they couldn't get it done against a New England squad that made up in grit what they lacked in talent. I close my eyes and see Eric Parker dropping sure passes, then fumbling a punt and trying to scoop it rather than just fall on it. How about the 3rd down sack that was canceled by a head butt penalty? Or the 4th down interception that turned into a fumble recovered by the Pats and a new series of downs? Geez what a choke job. This is sickening, just sickening.
Be serious it was not his fault. All the stupid penalties and the dropped passes where not the coach's problems. He went 14 and 3 give the guy a break and get rid of some of those idiots. It's a shame for LT what a player .
I agree Chelsea should be able to overtake Manchester United, if they keep playing sound football in the midfield.
I just hope the Saints don't ware there Arena football uniforms if they make it to the Super Bowl
Why is everyone so upset, they can still even the series in game two.
If Marty Schottenheimer does get fired by the Chargers there are a lot of NFL teams looking for a head coach that will make their teams playoff bound. The Chargers simply made critical miskates with the interception by the Chargers and fumble recovery by the Patriots on the same play that led to the Patriots score and two point conversion. Marty said it right the Chargers had a very good season.
Oooooooo....... Here ya go Bolts....here is the game...it's in the bag.....PSYCH!! Another Brady Miracle!! If Merriman is taking roids and lost....what the heck is Brady taking???
