MVP Race: Peyton Manning Wins

Each week we've looked at the players who led the race for league MVP. Today we render our final verdict.

1. Peyton Manning, quarterback, Colts: He led a team with horrid defense and special teams to 12 wins. He won't get the award, but Manning was the best player in the NFL this year.

2. LaDainian Tomlinson, running back, Chargers: Tomlinson will win easily. He's not a bad choice, but he's not the correct one, either.

3. Drew Brees, quarterback, Saints: Brees came back to earth a little bit after being sky-high for much of the season, and he ended up far short of the Dan Marino passing yards record that he once looked capable of breaking. But for the totality of his season, Brees has been outstanding.

4. Jason Taylor, defensive end, Dolphins: Retire? He shouldn't. He was the best defensive player in the league this season. Whoever the next coach of the Dolphins is, convincing Taylor to stay should be job No. 1.

5. Larry Johnson, running back, Chiefs: Another great game from Johnson against Jacksonville -- and a lot of luck with other teams losing -- led the Chiefs into the playoffs. Even if his team loses, he'll be a star this weekend, getting to play against the terrible Indianapolis run defense.
