I've given up on playoff scenarios. The Chiefs need to rely on the Bengals, Titans, and Denver to lose to make the playoffs. Miracles have happened before, but I think we all need to face reality: the Chiefs are not going to make the playoffs and the sooner we realize that, the sooner we can finally enjoy 2007 as "a new year."Not that it really matters. Let's face it: this Chiefs' team is not as good as we thought they were. I'm sick of talking about this season. Each time I talk about this season, I want to vomit all over myself. Let's start talking about next season, shall we?
The Chiefs MUST re-sign:
- Tony Gonzalez - without Gonzalez, the Chiefs go from average to really bad on offense. Pay him whatever it takes. He may be old, but he's not a player that relies on speed.
- Jared Allen - The Chiefs have a terrific defensive foundation and Jared Allen is one of the most important pieces.
- Randy from accounting - you keep crunching those numbers, Randy. I've got your back.
- Jessica Alba - Seeing her on the sidelines might keep me from crying after every disappointing loss.
- A wide receiver - Not a slot receiver; a legit #1 WR. Pretty please.
- A defensive tackle - I don't think the defense should take too much heat for this season's failures, but I do believe Herm Edwards has built a defense that is becoming very close to being outstanding. And one terrific defensive tackle to line up by Ron Edwards, in my opinion, could do just that.
- Greg Wesley - Jarrad Page is ready. And he's going to be 5 times the player Wesley is.
- Sammy Knight - Bernard Pollard is going to be a very good safety. I believe he can do a lot of the things that Knight can do, but he will get to the ball 5 times quicker.
- Ryan Sims - the experiment is over. Ryan Sims is an absolute, utter, and complete bust.
- Trent Green - what in the world do you do with him? Is it time that the Chiefs start grooming Brodie Croyle?
- Damon Huard - is he the rock the Chiefs want to rely on?
- Cap room: the Chiefs are on the low end of the cap spectrum this season. Though, I wonder how that cap figure changes once they configure retirements, giant cuts (aka, our two bum safeties), and restructurings. You've got a few guys like Trent Green who will almost certainly cut their cap figure and others like LJ who will likely get deals that will put a huge dent in their cap.
The Chiefs should make a lot of moves this offseason. The good news is, they have a good defensive foundation to rally the team around. The bad news is, the Chiefs have a lot of personnel work to do on offense and they may have limited resources to actually address these issues. It's going to be a busy offseason and, unfortunately, just like every other year as a Chiefs' fan, it's starting a few weeks too soon.

Alba idea = not bad
In all seriousness though, the Trent Green question is enormous. That's the biggest one IMO.
Also, with regard to the defensive foundation that's a good point, I'd just add that with LJ, Will Shields, Waters and Tony there's a pretty decent offensive foundation too. . .

its sad to say what this season came down to was a loss to the clevland browns and a quarterback who never threw an nfl pass. That clevland game was the tragic downfall in the chiefs season. Thats right clevland, it kills me to say it.

John--this is a terrific point. I think if you could isolate one single game that ruined the season, it was Cleveland. The Chiefs beat plenty of competitive teams, but it is pathetic that they failed to beat a team they absolutely should have beat.

I actually think that the Miami game killed us. A game btw that I attended (the only one this year besides the preseason game v NYG in NJ). It was a very winnable game, it went far in the decision to bench Huard because he looked bad (in retrospect he was/is much better than Green now) and it started IMO the doubts that would later kill us. . .
Cleveland was certainly pretty bad too though. . .

Just like the Dallas game last year, another bad loss for us is costing us a trip to the playoffs. Would this team do anything if we did make it? Probably not. It's best for us just to lick our wounds now and get ready for next year.

Joe, I entirely agree with you. The problem is, it seems like Chiefs' fans have been waiting for lots of next years.

What kills me, is the fact that we have a coach that's in denail. Herm still thinks Trent Green gives KC the best chance to win, and he will start this week.
Mike Ditka said it best during last night Cowboys game. Who cares if Trent Green has 4000 yards...he has not gotten KC to the Big dance. I know it's not all Trent's fault, but he is the leader on the team.

I agree that Miami was the start of the down fall. The Dolphins at that time was struggling, the chiefs had momentum. They should have won easily, but they were overly conservative.
On the other hand they either lack talent or the right mind set to go on the road and beat an playoff caliber team. So it is not like making the playoffs would do any good.

Vermiel let the defense deteriorate. Now Herm Edwards has let the offense decline. We need a good offense and defense before we can think of a superbowl. Remember we where in superbowl one, and won superbowwl four.Sure has been a long dry spell. Seems like there is no imagination in play calling. You need some of the backups to come forward,is still a eleven man game.

Let Gonzalez go!!!!!! He'll be a salary cap sponge. We don't throw to him enough anyway. All Chiefs fans knew we wouldn't make it to the playoff, we could have traded him for a 1st and 3-4th round draft picks!
TG....overrated!

Hmm... Jeremy, I cannot agree with you there. The problem is, we have nobody else to take coverage away from him. It's pathetic that we have 2 or 3 guys on him on every pass play and our receivers STILL can't get open. I guarantee that if we get ourselves a real #1 WR, Gonzalez would blow up and Gonzalez would make that WR a stud. As of now, Gonzalez is our entire pass offense. Without him, we go from average to lousy.
And I might add that Gonzalez is the most complete tight end in the league. Ask LJ if he'll miss Gonzalez. It's really underrated that Gonzalez can play all 3 downs, something that Gates cannot brag. Not only is Gonzalez one of the best receiving tight ends in the game, he's also one of the game's best blockers. TG will get a big contract somewhere, and he'll deserve every penny of it.
