As the NFL season draws to a close, here is the NFL FanHouse list of the five worst announcers in the game:1. Tony Kornheiser, ESPN: My colleague MJD has said it all. This has been an unmitigated disaster. When he's not genuflecting to James Belushi, he's delivering trite monologues about the importance of having a Super Bowl ring to the career of a quarterback. Kornheiser is good on the radio. He's good on Pardon the Interruption. Send him back there full time, ESPN.
2. Dick Vermeil, NFL Network (laryngitis edition): If you missed Saturday night's Cowboys-Falcons game, it's difficult to describe just how bad Vermeil's voice was. Vermeil is a knowledgeable, likable analyst, but if he can't talk, it's kind of beside the point. They finally put him out of his misery at halftime, but it was absurd that NFL Network put him on the air at all.
3. Tony Siragusa, Fox: I don't get why Siragusa is on the field instead of in the booth. He doesn't handle the typical sideline reporter role, he just kind of pontificates on whatever subject crosses his mind -- only he does it from the field instead of the booth. He feels out of place and rarely offers insight on the one area where he presumably has some expertise, line play.
4. Dan Dierdorf, CBS: Dierdorf seems like a nice enough guy, but he always sounds like he's expressing his opinions because he feels the need to express an opinion -- not because he actually feels strongly about the topic. He also has an annoying habit of always assuming the referee's decision is correct, even when a replay clearly shows otherwise.
5. Dick Enberg, CBS: There was a time when Dick Enberg was a great play-by-play man. That time was 30 years ago. Now he makes numerous mistakes, always seems a little confused, and generally acts like he'd rather tell you about a player's close relationship with his junior high school gym teacher than about what's going on down there on the field.

Bryant Gumbel of the NFL Network is far and away the worst. Most of the people mentioned are more like side kicks, but Gumbel is supposed to be running the show and it isn't going well.

While I do consider your 'nominations' somewhat a fair representation of the worst, I think you may have over looked some one who also shares many of the qualities you mentioned. But maybe his "Pro Football Hall Of Fame ' status, makes the media fearful of speaking against John Madden.
Certainly his long winded commentaries are adistraction form the game far more then many other announcers, especially while a play is in progress. Do we really need to know the menu at the stadium, or that he dripped mustard on a tie while eating a hot dog. Or commentary focusing on the business on the sidelines that does not effect the game. Then there is the 'personla relationships between this play or that one and this coach or that one'. He always seems 'so biased' in his play calling or his judgements rather then just announcing the 'action or providing insight'. His Coaching days were not so long, and certainly nothing muich to brag about, yet he 'acts as if he was the best' and manny others bow to his 'knowledge'. He is so 'self assumed' that we miss the Game we are trying to watch.
Madden announces all of his games, as if it is the viewers first football experience, and then tries to be 'colorful' and fails. If he did not have Al Michaels at his side he would certainly not be worthy of an announcer's booth job.

Joe Buck needs to go back to baseball. Be it his overreacting to Randy Moss's "mooning" a few years back, or his calling for QB's with winning records to be pulled. i.e. Plummer, Grossman. "Oh they'll be calling for Brian Griese all over Chicago this week." No, no they won't, because Brian Griese is not any good. Ask anyone in any other city he's played in. Grossman may have looked awful. But he's held solid on his off games with the Kyle Orton Theory of Winning -- Defensive/Special Teams touchdowns. Buck should do us all a favor and stick to baseball and accept that he'll never be the announcer his father was and learn to be okay with that and leave his absurdist comments out of football.

Tony Kornheiser is always trying to create a controversy because he does not know that much about football. More and more sport announcers rather talk about T.O and what someone said rather than announce the game. I hardly listen to the news anymore for the same reasons. I hope anouncers like Tony get the boot before they ruin sports altogether.

What annoys me the most is that these well-paid, educated men and women on the air know nothing about proper grammar. NEW record, NEW personal best, NEW team high, it's their fifth straight win in a row, they have now won their last seven consecutive games ... I could just go on and on. ESPN, especially, should hold classes for this. Have these people ever heard of being REDUNDANT? I try quickly to cover my ears when I hear this dumb grammar. As for a strong voice on the air, try Suzy Kolber.

You forgot Dennis Miller. He had to be the absolute worst idea anyone in TV broadcasting ever thought up. The man is a comedian... not a sportscaster! That should have been their first clue.
Tony Kornheiser works on radio, but not in the booth. With whatever salary they are paying him - he could buy some decent suits. Those 1970's polys are really ugly.

Face it, there is not enough ink to list all the bad ones! Promote Boom-box Esiason to one of the worse and call it a day. I do agree with the other ones mentioned, especially Dier-dorfus.

AT LEAST KORNHEISER IS FUNNY. HES ALWAYS GOOD FOR A FEW LAUGHS EACH HALF. THE WORST ARE THE BRYANT GUMBEL AND MIKE TIRICO BOTH OF THEM ARE JUST TOO STERILE TOO POLITE TO BE ANNOUNCING PRO FOOTBALL. ID MUCH RATHER BE SUBJECTED TO TONY'S SENSE OF HUMOR THEN TO EITHER GUMBEL OR TIRICO. MARV ALBERT WOULD DO A BETTER JOB THEN EITHER OF THESE TOO WITH NO FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE AT ALL!!!!! MAX : )

To "Frank"-
You cleary haven't listened to Madden this year, you're just regurgitating the same tired old criticism of him. Someone must have gotten to him before this year started, because he's been MUCH better at adding true color to the game and telling us relevant and interesting things about the game in progress. He had definitely become a parody of himself in recent years, but not this year. Also, you might want to check on stats before you say that his coaching career was "certainly nothing much to brag about". Last time I checked, he's got one of the highest win percentages of any NFL coach EVER, not to mention a Superbowl ring on his finger.

Joe Theisman must be in a class of his own. His fawning idolatry is by far the worst announcing on TV. Well, maybe Dickie V on BB broadcasts is as bad.

I must admit that I do not watch much football. To me the announcers are just trying to be entertaining as well as informative. I watch alot of the games without the audio and I block the commercials or go on to other stations. Really, it is no big deal to miss a few plays. Most of you guys need to relax and enjoy the game.

It shocks me that Joe Theisman is not number one let alone not making the top 5. He treats the listening audience to so much trivial babble. And he must believe each audience member is a first time football watcher . Most pathetic announcer I've ever heard.
