Terrell Owens: Top Sports Figure of 2006

Text Size A A A
Dwyane Wade may be the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, but he only takes second place on a survey of three dozen sports bloggers to determine the top 40 sports figures of 2006. The survey, conducted by Jamie Mottram of Mr. Irrelevant and including such blog luminaries as Deadspin, The 700 Level, Free Darko, Kissing Suzy Kolber, With Leather, and, of course, FanHouse, came up with Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens as the most-discussed person of the sports year.

The list is of the most frequently discussed people in sports this year, not the most admirable. Bob Costas compared the selection of T.O. to Saddam Hussein being Time's Person of the Year, but Time really has named Hitler, Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini as Men of the Year. T.O. is the most-discussed person in the sports blogosphere. That doesn't mean we bloggers like him.

Other NFL people to make the cut: Matt Leinart, Ben Roethlisberger, Vince Young, Reggie Bush, Eli Manning, Michael Vick, Clinton Portis, Art Shell, Chad Johnson, LaDainian Tomlinson, Brett Favre, Dennis Green, Rex Grossman and Shawne Merriman. Read the whole list.
