A follow-up to this morning's post, Now with audio. If you're wondering if there is some sort of reasonable claim Irvin was misinterpreted... uh... not so much.
That's right: there must be some brothers in Romo's background, because his great-great-great Grandma "ran over in the hood and something went down" or "pulled one of them studs up outta the barn." Not to get all Scoop Jackson on y'all, but if a white guy said that he'd have been shot by ESPN management. Can the widely-reviled Irvin survive? Let's hope not.
Whitlock, we've got some bojangling on line three.

Much like the garbage that Barkley gets away with because there are double standards (no doubt about it), and this is coming from a black man, Irvin will not be disciplined. ESPN thinks it's funny when Irvin acts like an idiot and says idiotic things.
It's no different than when Mr. Arrogant, Bryant Gumble, stated that "no one of color" should watch the Winter Olympics because no one of color is involved. That's like saying "no one white should watch the sprints" in the Summer Olympics. HBO didn't fire Gumble then for those idiotic comments (who is he to speak for an entire race), and ESPN won't fire Irvin for his stupidity either.

( Mike Irvin) I hope he is fired. He is no model for anyone. Hes a drug user and loves women of the night. A criminal that could play football or he'd just be a hood. But above all he is just a bad announcer.

I am so sick and tired of having to listen to Michael Irvin's street black act on ESPN that I don't even watch it anymore and it's a shame because the other cast members are very entertaining, articulate and well spoken. If I wanted to listen to people talking like street trash I could just go down to South East DC and stand on the street corner. And poor Michael Richards is under the gun. So strange that the "N" word is off limits but its perfectly acceptable for black to call white men "white boy". Next time I hear it, I'm coming out swinging. Fire that street trash, drug dabbling, prostitute using Michael Irvin today please!

To Poster #4: "Poor Michael Richards"? If you truly believe that Michael Irvin's comments were inappropriate -- and I do -- then you have to recognize that Michael Richards' were as well. Both statements have the effect of reinforcing historical stereotypes and encouraging racial divisiveness. It shouldn't be tolerated (or rewarded by ESPN salaries) from either side.

If he is not fired it will be another example of some people getting away with anything! (i.e. O.J, Ray Lewis, etc...)

He was probably just coked up. He should be fired, not so much for these comments, but for being a crappy commentator in general.

To poster 6, what Irvin said has nothing in common with O.J and Ray Lewis. Those incidents someone lost their lives, we're talking about some jackass comments Irvin made. There is no correlation between the 2.

Brian,
The dudes who are with you on this one seem to all be of the "OMG REVERSE RACISM" type. There are other reasons, but that's one that indicates you might be wrong in your condemnation.

Is what Michael Irving said ignorant? Yes. Depending on your perspective you can take it either way. The truth is Michael Irvin is not a good analyst and every year he gets shunned by the Hall of Fame makes it more awkward on the ESPN set. He definitely should go after this season. As far as taking offense to his comments... its all a matter of opinion. But please dont try and turn this into a huge race banter. And trying to compare what Irvin said to what Richards said is like comparing someone shooting you in the heart to someone stepping on your foot. Please!

Number 4, C. Blatchford. You donot realize that "white boy", does not have the same negative meaning as the "N word" and never will. To put that on the same level is ignorant.

Is what Michael said offensive because he is right or because he is wrong? I what he said offensive because there are so few white athletes in the NFL and NBA today and he may be right about physcial skill and geneology? Or is he offensive because he acts "street" or "ghetto" like the black athletes on the field? And is there jealousy because they get away with taking the spotlight from white people? Is it uncomfortable because he is right or because he is wrong?

Post #11 What exactly is "reverse racism"? Does this imply that it is only racism when it is directed toward a minority? Irvon's comments are extremely offensive to me as a white man because they imply that I do not have the ability to be a great athlete unless I have "a n***** in the wood pile".

I'm caucasian, Michael Irvin's comment is funny, but not appropriate subject matter for a national TV show regardless of any race implications.

Well, I'm black, and I think it's funny. Sorry, white friends (and I have many of you): There is a "double-standard," but black folks didn't create it, and
America's lucky that blacks mostly throw out the race-card only in jest, as opposed to payback lynchings. Of course a white man would have been fired, and rightly so. The "even-playing-field is a figment of white folks' amnesiatic imagination. Love you, though.
