Jake Plummer opened the 2005 season against Miami with a 51.6 quarterback rating. The next week wasn't much better, when he posted a 70.6 rating, while getting sacked three times, throwing no touchdowns, and one interception.
And then the next week, he destroyed Kansas City with a 116.0 rating, and in week four, he buried Jacksonville with a 110.4 rating.
Inconsistency is his trademark. This is what Jake Plummer does. He will have good games this year, they're just more likely to be the games where he throws the ball less than 20 times.
I know Jay Cutler looked good in the preseason, but you know ... so did Chris Simms. Rookie quarterbacks who can win a lot of games don't come along every day, and unless you're willing to roll the dice and bet on the (very) longshot that Jay Cutler will be as good as Ben Roethlisberger in his rookie year, you've just got to ride it out with Jake.
Denver's a team that was expecting to be in the Super Bowl this year. Inserting a rookie quarterback right now would be a little bit of a panic move. It would be about the same thing as giving up on the Super Bowl all together? How often is a rookie quarterback going to get a team to the Super Bowl?
Jake still gives them the best chance to get there. Denver fans just are just going to have to live with a few performances like this per year.

ok, here's the problem in Denver. Shanahan not Jake, but unfortunately Jake gets the blame for every time things go sour. He's the scape goat!!!!!....Shanny made 3 HUGE mistakes before the season even got underway. #1 he named an unproven rookie the starter at tailback. #2 he didn't name Ashlie Lelie the number one receiver. Rod has been great, let's face facts, he's going to retire soon and Ashlie is a bigger loss than they thought he would be. #3 When he drafted Jay Cutler, he should've sat Jake down and went publicly and told Jake and everyone else, that this is Definitely Jake's team. We took Cutler with the 10th pick overall, because you just can't pass on that kind of talent in that spot, but in no way was it a move to push Jake for the job. I was in St Louis, and I watched them on TV in week two, there is absolutely no continuity on the offensive side of the ball, and Jake is not the problem Shannahan, and the play calling is to blame. I hate to say this because they have so much talent on this team and they are pissing it away, but if they win 8 games this season, they better feel lucky.
