The Redskins cut 12 players from the roster as they head into the final preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday. Two of those cuts are defensive linemen, a unit which has taken a beating in injuries already.
The 12 players cut include:
- OL Jon Alston
- QB Casey Bramlet
- DB Antuan Edwards
- TE Robert Johnson
- OL Jim Jones
- K Tyler Jones
- P David Lonie
- DL Chris Mineo
- TE Calen Powell
- DL Karon Riley
- LB Kevin Simon
- DB Aric Williams
None of them come as too much of a surprise. TE Robert Johnson's injury prevented him from getting enough playing time to show what he had since he was kind of expected to make the team. The solid play of TE Buck Ortega, though, probably accelerated his dismissal. The Redskins now have 76 players on the roster who will get one final look this Thursday. The team has to cut around 20 more players before the season opener against former Redskins QB Brad Johnson and the Minnesota Vikings.

I was a bit surprised by Robert Johnson. Obviously the injury makes it difficult to compete, but even though I had picked Ortega to make the team in my preseason roster prediction, I felt his size (6'4 232) would make that impossible. Seeing as how the team now only has 3 tight ends on the roster, Buck Ortega's spot on the team is clinched in my opinion.
Too bad about Simon.

I had no idea who Buck was, didn't even know he was on the team, until the first preseason game. And since then, he has consistently caught my eye. He can catch. He doesn't look like he's going to much as far as a blocker, but maybe Al Saunders can figure out what to do with him - that is, if he can survive the last cut.

Makes two of us. He'd really be a shocker as a regular season keeper because even Jess Lumsden and Mike Espy had pre-preseason fan clubs. Buck Ortega earned every ounce of looks he's had this preseason in games.
He came in late vs. Cincy and had the longest reception of the game. Johnson goes down in the NYJ game and he has, again, the longest reception of the game. Even in our dismal NE game he picked up a pair of receptions; not bad for a 230 pound TE.
Honestly I put him on a 53 man roster prediction because I thought it would generate discussion. But every chance this guy gets, he goes out and preforms. We only have 3 Tight Ends on the roster now: and Cooley and Fauria both have 30 pounds on this guy. Should one of them go down, he'll need to lineup as a blocker on a lot of plays. If the coaches think he's up to the challenge then... by all means.
I can't imagine him not making the team at this point, but it really is an interesting turn of events. I hope he makes it.
